Principal Troy Young announces ACHS will hire Spanish teacher

But two site based council members lodge a procedural question with the superintendent, who will be poring over site-specific policies for Adair County High School before determining whether Mr. Young followed procedure or whether the council will be told to reconvene to make the decision according to policy.

After nearly three hours of discussion at Adair County High School Site Based Council meeting today, Principal Troy Young, the chairman of the committee, announced that a Spanish teacher would be hired instead of hiring a third Agriculture teacher to replace Terry Harvey, who has retired.

The announcement came at the displeasure of an overwhelming majority in the crowd, which was estimated at over 600 people. And it not clear at this point whether the matter is over. And now the next move is in Superintendent Alan W. Reed's hands.

Judge Melton asks for prayers of community

To the People of Adair County:

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly ask for prayers tonight for our community. Tomorrow will be a monumental day in the history of Columbia and Adair County. Difficult decisions will be made by both the Hospital Board and the Fiscal Court that will affect our community for many years to come.

I don't recall, in my lifetime, an issue of more importance than the decisions we face tomorrow. Healthcare for a community is a basic need and if we ever expect to grow and prosper in this community, We must save our hospital.

Our hospital has saved many lives in Adair County and it does not matter Whose life may be next, your family or mine. Saving lives is and should be our first priority.

Then the economical impact of losing our Hospital and the many jobs that it provides will effect every aspect and every business in our community. We must pray for the Lord to give each of us the wisdom to make the best possible decisions and we must pray for the employees that will be effected by those decisions.

Thank You,
Ann Melton, Adair County Judge Executive

Witnesses long line of farm vehicles supporting FFA

All three of her children have benefitted from Ag

Martha Lacy writes:
I just witnessed the long line of people who are supporting our Adair Co. AG Department, as they came rolling up to the high school this afternoon.

I am a mom of three children who were in this class and they all three have benefited greatly from what they learned in it.

I want the Ag department to know that our family is standing totally in favor of the third teacher being hired. As an instructional assistant in the schools system, I have been in the three classes with three different students and all the classes teach a different area of Ag.

Mr Rexroat, he has the plants and vegetable part. Mr Hancock, is the animal section and Mr.Harvey's was the building and welding.

I work with special need students and each time I was in these classes the teachers were very helpful and made sure that we were given a chance just like the other students. I don't understand how doing away with one of the classes is going to be fair to these students who have been in Ag for their high school career, they can't finish what they have started.

Ag is more than what most people think the class is. They teach a lot of things that help on down in life. If we want to eat we need Ag to stay. -Martha Lacy

Dakota Meyer not taking sides in FFA issue

Mr. Waggener,

Dakota Meyer was unknowingly represented during the protest at Adair County High School, as Larry Helm drove his semi-truck with Dakota's picture and scholarship initiative information through the protest. Upon learning of Mr. Helm's participation, I called Larry and asked him to remove his truck from the protest. Dakota has taken no position on this issue and does not wish to be represented as supporting either side. Larry did not mean any harm by representing Dakota in the protest and immediately withdrew from participation. I want to share this information with you so that no pictures or mentions of Dakota's unintended participation in the protest would be included in your publication.

Best regards,
Monica Johnson
Executive Assistant to Dakota Meyer

Ever wonder what Agriculture teachers have done for county?

By Abby Royse

What have Agriculture teachers done for Adair County?
- Teacher-James Woody ran the cannery which fed thousands of people. This was before we had much electricity. Mr. Woody and Joe Janes went to Wisconsin some 60 years ago to buy Dairy breeding stock. Adair County now ranks number 2 in dairy in the state.

- Teacher-Vernie Vaught was first to use gas on tobacco beds. This saved on weed control in those plant beds.

- Teacher- Sammy Baker showed hundreds of students how to make money in the livestock and dairy business. Adair County is ranked in the top 5 in the state in livestock.

- Teachers and Judge--Teachers Sammy Baker, Mr. Terry Harvey and Judge Richard Walker brought the Greenhouse to our school at little cost to the school. The greenhouse is known as a reliable source of plants in our community.

- Teacher--Randy Rexroat was the first to bring float bed tobacco plants to Adair County--saving farmers money on labor and improving tobacco production.

- Teacher-Kirby Hancock worked many hours getting the school the new and very nice Agriculture barn used to work with community members' and students' livestock.
Has any other teaching position done this much to help Adair County's economy?

Sincerely,

-Abby Royse
Senior Adair County FFA member

We need to know the Paul Harvey about Westlake

PERSONAL COMMENTARY: It's time to listen to what Craig Pyles and Richard Grant have to say; it's time to quit being secretive; it's time to let business people run Westlake like a business

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Personal Commentary of the writer

What Craig Pyles and Richard Grant have told us is not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear.

No business can spend more than it does not take in nor can it support a payroll bigger than it needs. Sounds harsh?

Joyce Coomer sends refinements of August Fog Predictions

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
My father used the fogs in August as a predictor for snows in winter. He kept track not only of how many fogs, but how heavy they were, and what time of morning they burned off (I assume that meant how long a snowfall would last.). The first third of August corresponded to the first month of winter, the second third to the second month of winter, and the last third to the third month of winter. Seldom was there much variation in the fog to snow ratio. --Joyce M Coomer

Larry Smith: Fogs never fail predicting future

Larry Smith reports a beautiful commute to Radio Station FM 92.7 this morning, with absolutely no fog.

He's kept a count: Six fogs so far this August.

Already, he says, we are in for 3 significant snows - which, if they land on school days, will be school closers and David Jones won't let the busses roll.

"And," he adds, "we're in for three 1-2" snows," just from the fogs we've had so far. He's relying on proven old timey orthodoxy - neither adding to or taking from the wisdom of his forefathers: You count the fogs in August, and that's how many snows you'll have the following winter. "It absolutely never fails," he says.

Kentucky Color - Dogwood Prelude to Autumn and Winter

Click on headline for essay and photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge

The orange and red Dogwood drupes were a sure signal to our subsistence farmer parents, grandparents, etc. that mid-august had arrived. Along with the cool evenings, morning fogs and lower humidity's the Dogwood served as a prelude to Autumn and Winter for those "Old folks" who lived more by the signs than by the clock or even the calendar.

Nowadays the upcoming winter is viewed as just a minor inconvenience to be lamented and fussed about but as this time of year rolled around for our loved ones from yesteryear it was a time to add up the stores of food, livestock, livestock feed, and firewood. Being prepared for the upcoming winter was a matter of life and death. - BIlly Joe Fudge
