Principal Troy Young announces ACHS will hire Spanish teacher

But two site based council members lodge a procedural question with the superintendent, who will be poring over site-specific policies for Adair County High School before determining whether Mr. Young followed procedure or whether the council will be told to reconvene to make the decision according to policy.

After nearly three hours of discussion at Adair County High School Site Based Council meeting today, Principal Troy Young, the chairman of the committee, announced that a Spanish teacher would be hired instead of hiring a third Agriculture teacher to replace Terry Harvey, who has retired.

The announcement came at the displeasure of an overwhelming majority in the crowd, which was estimated at over 600 people. And it not clear at this point whether the matter is over. And now the next move is in Superintendent Alan W. Reed's hands.

During the past week, the farming community has coalesced behind a movement to win popular sentiment and the Site Based Decision Making Council's consensus or vote to keep the agriculture faculty position.

Two of the SBDM members, Sandy Pyles and Melinda Pyles, have taken the matter to Superintendent Alan W. Reed, They asked him to review the SBDM bylaws to determine if Principal Young's decision will stand.

Mrs. Pyles said she was surprised when she heard the decision, saying that she thoughtno consensus was reached, and that a vote was not taken. But she was not sure if the bylaws and/or certain state laws would allow a unilateral decision. That what Mr. Reed will be wrestling with tomorrow.

"I'll be going over the Adair County SBDM bylaws," he said. "They are site-specific and the rules at the high school may allow a decision such as was made. Then," he said, I'll make one of two decisions. That the rules were followed, or that they were not. It they were, Mr. Young's decision is final. If they weren't, the council will be reconvened and will follow policy." The meeting had been originally scheduled for the high school library, but was moved to the ACHS gymnasium when it was seen that a venue with better seating was needed.

The council was present, including: Mr. Troy Young, Principal; Mr. Michael Godsey, Teacher; Mr. Kevin Robertson, Teacher; Marsha Reddick, Teacher; Mrs. Melinda Franklin, Parent; Mrs. Sandy Pyles, Parent.

Mr. Young spoke first, followed by opening remarks by Mr. Kirby Hancock , then David Herbst, Crystal Caldwell, Lebanon Attorneys Elmer George and Todd Spalding, Tim Baker, Tommy Grider, Danny Wilkinson, Greg Corbin, Lynda Wilkerson, Debra Wimmer, Billy Rowe, and Mr. Hancock completed the round of speakers. All spoke for the third agriculture teacher except Mrs. Wimmer, who advocated for the addition of a music teacher.

SBDM Council member Sandy Pyles issued a formal statement, saying, "Today's Site Base meeting was not the outcome I expected !!! I truly thought that as a council we could discuss and agree to go to Mr. Reed and request that we hire 2 positions. I had no idea a decision was already made or I would have been home with my family instead of wasting my time as well as that of all those who attended."

Bliss farmer Vicky Pike had a similar sentiment, "They could have save me a lot of time. I was lucky that I got to the school early and got to tour the Ag buildings, but I wished I had been home feeding my girls instead of spending three hours if the decision had already been made."

Superintendent Reed said that he would have his decision in as quickly as possible.
