Kentucky Color - Dogwood Prelude to Autumn and Winter

Click on headline for essay and photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge

The orange and red Dogwood drupes were a sure signal to our subsistence farmer parents, grandparents, etc. that mid-august had arrived. Along with the cool evenings, morning fogs and lower humidity's the Dogwood served as a prelude to Autumn and Winter for those "Old folks" who lived more by the signs than by the clock or even the calendar.

Nowadays the upcoming winter is viewed as just a minor inconvenience to be lamented and fussed about but as this time of year rolled around for our loved ones from yesteryear it was a time to add up the stores of food, livestock, livestock feed, and firewood. Being prepared for the upcoming winter was a matter of life and death. - BIlly Joe Fudge
