Dr. Roger D. Smith comments on FFA, Agriculture

Roger D Smith DMD writes:
I can relate to the questions and comments of the young people about their FFA program and the classes related to it.

Unfortunately, reason doesn't always will out. Our largest industry in this county is Agriculture! It seems that this being true, it should follow that it would be reasonable to support the industry.

Years ago, when I was a high school student, the decision was made to eliminate Physics and teach French IV. This was of great concern to me and several others because we knew that we needed Physics in college. What Physics I learned was due Mrs. Ethel Scott, on my own, and in her free time. Soon, in college, I realized that I was far behind my fellow college students. If my ancient mind is correct we did not turn out one French teacher but we did have Vets, MDs, a DMD, Pharmacists, RNs and many other science related professionals. Each of these degrees required some level of Physics.

Not all of our students desire or need a college education, but they all need to learn how to make a decent living. The choices made by the leaders of today shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Hospital looking at drastic cost cutting measures

Spectrum is leaving effective September 14, 2012.
"The situation is bad. It's beyond bad... no easy way out...we're running like a big hospital, with champagne taste and beer pocketbook," - CRAIG PYLES, new vice chair, Adair County Hospital Board

By Ed Waggener

With one of the biggest crowds ever in attendance at tonight's special called meeting of the Adair County Hospital District, two new members, Craig Pyles and Richard Grant, were able to get unanimous agreement to "look at" severe cost cutting measures, including:
  • 10-15% pay reduction for employees
  • No longer contributing to employee's life, dental or disability insurance premiums
  • Cutting health insurance benefits to a 50-50 share, with employees paying one-half their cost
  • A reduction in force of 30-35 employees
Pyles moved to adopt the objectives, and the motion received a second from Richard Grant. The other three members, Chairman Jim Evans and members Bruce White and Russell Guy Perkins cast Yes votes, but each noted their vote was to "look at" the matter.

FFA experience: A proud family tradition

Learning to speak in public accomplishment which is now used regularly in own business

By Jessica Froedge

I was very proud to hand the tradition of being enrolled in agriculture classes down to Brooke, with her being my younger sister.

I was the 2007-2008 Vice President and I have to agree with her, I was challenged every day, by doing activities that I would not normally be exposed to. Owning my own business here in Columbia, I use my public speaking every day.

Kentuckians should get flu vaccine when it becomes available at their health care provider Kentucky Department of Public Health recommends

By Barbara Fox and Beth Fisher
News from the Kentucky Department of Public Health

Following reports of the first lab-confirmed cases of influenza this season, Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) officials urge Kentuckians to get a vaccination against influenza as soon as vaccine becomes available from their health care provider.

The reported cases are residents of Boyd County, and the seasonal H3N2 type of influenza virus was identified in each case. Protection against that strain is included in this season's influenza vaccine. No cases of the H3N2 variant influenza that contain genetic material from swine influenza have been reported in Kentucky to date.

Brooke Harmon: What FFA means to me

By Brooke Harmon

Being able to serve as the 2010-2011 Adair County FFA President was one of my greatest accomplishments during my four year high school career.

To me, FFA is not just an organization but a family, and the agriculture classes are not just classes, but a way of life. Without FFA, I strongly believe that I would not be the person that I am today.

Jon Halsey makes note on the Hospital Tax Recall petition

Jon Halsey writes:
Just one slight but important clarification:

It is not taxpayers or even voting taxpayers.

It is only property owners who will be paying for the folly of a few. It is also only the property owners who continue to see increases so the various taxing boards can continue to give raises and continue spending at a time when most are happy just to have a job and haven't seen a raise in a number of years yet see the cost of living ( the real cost of living not the politically adjusted COL) rise every time they go to the grocery store or stop at a gas pump. Thinks other efforts might get better results than tax recall

John Ford writes:
Jon (Halsey), I agree and support your position all the way. I just think that your time would be better served to petition the government to have a peaceful demonstration on the square to which you could invite the media and some state officials or do any number of other things that could bring light upon the situation. Only then will things get done. I hope that I didn't give the wrong impression and imply that nothing should be done, it does my heart good to see the effort. I just think that even if you win...you lose. P.S. Is this an election year for state officials? If so I would bet money that someone in frankfort would just love to ride in here and save the day for all you taxpayers, or should I say voting taxpayers. Voting is the only leverage a taxpayer has and if you can't get any satisfaction then vote against them. - John Ford

Phyllis Curry will be sharing Adair ACT scores tonight

And there are worrisome aspects to trend, Supt. Reed says, urging everyone interested in the future of Adair County to attend the regular monthly meeting tonight.

By Ed Waggener

"Our school district is faced with a dilemma, but I know Adair Countians are up to the challenge," Superintendent Alan W. Reed said, urging Adair Countians to attend all school board meetings, especially the one tonight.

Phyllis Curry will be sharing Adair ACT scores tonight, and that information presents one of the greatest challenges currently before the school board, the superintendent says,. "The data suggest that way too many are ill-prepared for higher education of any kind, whether it is a two year or four year program or even tough vocational programs," he said.

FFA more important to son than football

Kim Bryant writes:
My son is a junior and a member of FFA. It is teaching him life skills and things about farming that will be very useful to him, as he plans on farming when he gets out of school. I realize that ACHS might need another foreign language teacher, but not at the expense of our agriculture students. FFA is as important to my son as football is to an athlete. He should not have something taken away from him that he has been a part of for the last three years. There has to be a better way. - Kim Bryant
