FFA experience: A proud family tradition

Learning to speak in public accomplishment which is now used regularly in own business

By Jessica Froedge

I was very proud to hand the tradition of being enrolled in agriculture classes down to Brooke, with her being my younger sister.

I was the 2007-2008 Vice President and I have to agree with her, I was challenged every day, by doing activities that I would not normally be exposed to. Owning my own business here in Columbia, I use my public speaking every day.

To say the least, this was something that I was not confident in or did very well until my agriculture teachers pushed me to participate in many of the speaking activities where I actually went to state, against 100's of other kids and placed. To me this is an accomplishment that not many students can say they have.

Agriculture holds a special place in my heart and all my memories of high school are some how related to this class.

My husband is also an alumnus of Adair County FFA and as we were talking about the issues that surround the agriculture department he also had many memories and many of the same feelings that I have.

He also owns his own business where he puts many of the lessons he learned in agriculture class to work every day.

Welding and forestry were just two of the many things he remembered, as well as uses everyday seeing that he has a trucking and logging business in Columbia.

We both strongly support many of the FFA teams every year with monetary contributions, because we believe that this gives the kids an opportunity that they may not other wise have. We are both very concerned and disheartened that this issue is even being brought up.

I can say this much I use my agriculture experiences a lot more than what I use my foreign language skills. To me both of these classes are equally important, but to take one out to support another is absurd. - Jessica Froedge Comments re article 53794 Brooke Harmon What FFA means to me
