UK Ag Economics grad from Adair served well by degrees

Comments re article 53787 President of ACHS FFA tells what FFA has meant to her

By Theresa Hadley Bethel

I received my BS and MS degrees in Agriculture Economics from the University of Kentucky and served as Director of Student Placement for the Ag College for 4 years. My classmates and the students that I advised that were active in FFA and Ag classes in their high schools were the leaders of the College and continue to be community leaders across the country.

I recently read an article in USA TODAY and respectively request that those responsible for making the curriculum decisions at ACHS read the article. Columbia Magazine has had to disable the ability to submit web addresses due to spam, but you can google "usa today ag majors" and it is the first article.

As the article states - "There's a better understanding that when we use the term agriculture, it's not all plows and cows." Agriculture majors have always been well prepared for jobs in the Food & Fiber Industry, but Agriculture has become integrated into a variety of sectors - pharmaceuticals, energy, chemicals and science. My fellow Ag graduates are veterinarians, doctors, lawyers, pharmacist, dentist, bankers, insurance agency owners, educators, successful farmers, pharmaceutical salesman, city planners, lobbyist and the list goes on and on.

My degrees in Ag have served me well as they have many other Adair Countians. I would hope that the Adair County School System would do all it can to encourage and aid students in their pursuit of knowledge in this field at both the high school and college level.

Respectively,
Theresa Hadley Bethel
