Backyard Party at the International Student Programs

By Sabine Eastham, Director of International Student Programs

On Tuesday, May 6, 2019, the International Student Programs (ISP) at LWC, invited students to a "backyard party" at their campus location at 304 Lindsey Wilson Street. The motto was: "Stressed about Finals- Graduation- leaving America? The proposed remedy was: "Games, Snacks, and Creative Painting with Victoria's Splatter Closet".

About 85 students, domestic as well as international, staff and professors, stopped by for the first ever backyard party at the ISP house! Our own Dean of Students, Dr. Chris Schmidt, volunteered his time and expertise and grilled the hotdogs to perfection. One of our wonderful host parents, Veronica Klinglesmith, drove in from Campbellsville to offer stress relief with her "Splatter Closet".

Students gathered to write final messages to their friends, ran around the backyard blowing bubbles, playing corn hole and trying their luck in hula hoops.

Scam alert: expensive toll fees billed to victims who reply

Frankfort, KY - Following a warning from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Attorney General Andy Beshear issued a scam alert to warn Kentuckians against returning "one ring" phone calls that he said can result in costly billing charges.

The scam is carried out when a victim misses a phone call from an unknown number, calls the number back and is connected to a scammer that is collecting toll fees similar to those of dialing a 1-900 number. The FCC indicates phone numbers both in the U.S. and from international area codes that also use three digits are being used in the scam, which is being reported across the country.

Letter: business with Fletcher Chrysler IS local business

Steve Fletcher wants the public to know that doing business with him IS doing business locally even though his dealership is in Indiana. He says, "I was born and raised here, I own property here. I bank in Columbia, have insurance in Columbia, and I'm a reg'lar at Betty's."

Steve Fletcher, in response to comments on ColumbiaMagazine.com about the bids accepted on the Sheriff's vehicles, states that when the Adair County Fiscal Court accepted the vehicle low bid from his Chrysler dealership, it IS doing business locally and the dollars spent here are banked here.

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month

By Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - Significant hearing loss can impact one's emotional well-being, ability to work, socialize and even have a conversation with a family member or friend. May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, and the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet is raising awareness about the effects of hearing loss and providing resources for Kentuckians impacted by hearing loss.

Nearly 700,000 or 16 percent of Kentuckians are deaf and hard of hearing. Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises such as power equipment, car stereos, concerts, personal audio devices and fireworks. As a part of Better Speech and Hearing Month, KCDHH encourages everyone to be aware of the signs of hearing loss and learn about resources available to Kentuckians if a hearing loss is suspected.

"Whether it's a child who misses the language exposure that is critical for brain and communication development, or an adult who experiences career, social and quality-of-life issues, ignoring hearing loss can negatively affect your well-being, cognitive skills, mental health and even your heart health," said KCDHH Executive Director Virginia L. Moore.

Kentucky Color - Destination Sunset

By Billy Joe Fudge

Standing on the Old San Carlos Boulevard Fishing Pier at Fort Myers Beach during sunset will plunge one into emotional and optic overload! Many of us who who can't paint a wall, suffer an urge to set up an easel and canvas, lay hold to an artist palette and knife, don a French Wool Beret and create a masterpiece!

The first week of May in Southwest Florida is mind-bendingly beautiful and most times, very comfortable.
