Letter: History of the Welcome sign

Robby Morrison writes:
My father Bobby would probably know who actually paid for it when we put it up in the 1970s. It says the Chamber of Commerce, so it probably was not the city or the county that paid for it.

Knowing my father, he probably donated most of it. I recall repainting it when I was in high school sometime between 1981 and 1983. I also saw that the Columbia Candy Company sign, in another Columbia Magazine article this week, that we originally painted in the 1970s is still there also. Apparently we did some quality sign work back then.

With the fuel system out at the airport that I installed in the early 90s being replaced last year and now this sign being removed I guess I will have to come back home and make some other contribution that will last for the next thirty years. --Robby

Letter: Hwy 55 turn lanes need work for safety

Maury E Lewis writes:
If someone is coming in from the north, headed south on Highway 55 and needs to turn into Dr. Giles' office, the pharmacy or the gas station, when they finish it, has to stop in a passing lane to make a left turn into any of these businesses. Can they shorten the passing lane for the safety of the people stopped in that lane and the ones coming up behind them?

Can they make them turn lanes? --Melewi

Maury, good thinking!! I hope this will be done as quickly as the State Highway Department can make it happen.

Letter: Needs to be preserved

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
I think the sign needs to be preserved. It's a bit of the county or city history that people seldom think about. Repainting and updating it would be nice. But to destroy something just because some people consider it unsightly and complain about everything that isn't new or fancy or spotless is, in my opinion, just plain wrong. --Joyce
