Letter: History of the Welcome sign

Robby Morrison writes:
My father Bobby would probably know who actually paid for it when we put it up in the 1970s. It says the Chamber of Commerce, so it probably was not the city or the county that paid for it.

Knowing my father, he probably donated most of it. I recall repainting it when I was in high school sometime between 1981 and 1983. I also saw that the Columbia Candy Company sign, in another Columbia Magazine article this week, that we originally painted in the 1970s is still there also. Apparently we did some quality sign work back then.

With the fuel system out at the airport that I installed in the early 90s being replaced last year and now this sign being removed I guess I will have to come back home and make some other contribution that will last for the next thirty years. --Robby
