Evelyn Lawhorn Bunch, 81, Columbia, KY native (1937-2019)

She was a kind and gentle spirit that raised a loving and close family.

Evelyn Lawhorn Bunch of New Hill, NC and formerly of Columbia, KY died Friday, June 28, 2019 at the daughter's residence in New Hill, NC. She was 81 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Jimmy Bunch, Bro. Steve Bunch and Bro. David Bunch officiating. Burial will follow in the Hadley Cemetery at Fairplay.

Visitation will be after 3:30pmCT on Tuesday at the funeral home.

KSP: Injury Collision on KY70 in Casey County

Clementsville, KY - Kentucky State Police investigated a single vehicle injury collision today, 10 miles East of Liberty on KY70 at 8:27 a.m. ET.

Preliminary investigation indicates that 23 year-old Trevor Dowell of Tateville, KY was operating a 2000 Western Star tractor-trailer traveling East on KY 70. Dowell came into a curve causing his passenger side wheels to drop off the right side of the roadway. When the vehicle dropped off the roadway, the load shifted causing the vehicle to strike a culvert and overturn. Dowell was transported to Lake Cumberland Hospital in Somerset by the Casey County EMS with non-life threatening injuries

Officer First Class Casey Tooley is investigating and was assisted on scene by other KSP personnel, Casey County Fire, EMS and Kentucky Department of Transportation.

KY Dept of Revenue sets State Property Tax Rate for 2019

Frankfort, KY - Today the Kentucky Department of Revenue has released the 2019 State Real Property Tax Rate, which is 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Kentucky Revised Statute 132.020 requires the department to set the real property rate no later than July 1 of each year. This rate is based on the revenue generated from the increase in taxable real property assessments from 2018 to 2019.

Post 15 to conduct safety traffic checkpoints

Kentucky State Police, Post 15 will be conducting safety traffic checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Washington, Marion, Taylor, Green, Casey, Russell, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton and Cumberland. Troopers will be checking for impaired drivers, children that are not properly restrained in child safety seats and informing the public about the use of seatbelts.

These safety checkpoints will be conducted in various locations throughout the Post 15 area that are experiencing a high ratio of vehicular crashes resulting in injury and/or death compared to relatively low safety restraint usage ratio.

What to know about the Kentucky Pregnant Workers Act

Kentuckians will be affected by several new laws that went into effect at the end of June, most notably a new law lessening restrictions on concealed carry and a new law protecting pregnant workers at eligible workplaces.

What does the Kentucky Pregnant Workers Act mean? The new law, which became effective June 27, means that employers must offer "reasonable accommodation" for pregnant persons in the workplace. Eligible employers must accommodate childbirth and related medical conditions, such as the need to breastfeed or pump, without discrimination.

Carney Selected Chair of Key Regional Education Council

Frankfort, KY - State Representative, House Majority Floor Leader and lifelong educator John "Bam" Carney will hold yet another key position within the education policy community as chair of the Southern Regional Education Board's Legislative Advisory Council.

The Atlanta-based Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) is a nonpartisan organization that works to improve public education at every level. It is consistently recognized as a leader in education policy as well as for providing state leaders with reliable data and research aimed at strengthening student learning through effective state policies. The organization also provides opportunities for state leaders to collaborate in order to share resources and ideas aimed at improving student outcomes.

Carney, a lifelong educator who is employed by Taylor County Schools, was selected by his SREB peers for the role.

Chris Wells ascends to NAIA-SIDA President

Lindsey Wilson College Sports Information Director Chris Wells ascended to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-Sports Information Director Association (NAIA-SIDA) presidency recently at the NAIA-SIDA Convention in Orlando, Florida.

Wells will serve the final year of outgoing NAIA-SIDA President Aaron Sagraves, who left the position after becoming athletics director at Cornerstone (Mich.). Wells will then serve his scheduled three-year term beginning in the 2020-21 academic year.

Cocanougher reunion will be held 28 Jul 2019

Cocanougher name was also recorded over the years as Conour or Connour. Connours live in various states but due to genealogical work by this family they were able to trace themselves to Kentucky Cocanougher family.

For the first time in over 200 years there will be another family of a child of Jacob and Eleanor (Neley) Silvertooth Cocanougher represented at The Kentucky Cocanougher Reunion.

Many of them will join us (mostly descendants of George & Martha (Hilton) Cocanougher families) on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the Cocanougher Reunion at The American Legion Hall in Perryville KY from 11am-4pmET.

City raising funds for school backpacks

Columbia City Hall and Columbia City Police Department announced that the City will be providing a back-to-school event for students in our community.

"We realize the needs facing families in our community," said Pamela Hoots, Mayor, who made the announcement in conjunction with City Police Chief Jason Cross. "We hope that this event will assist with alleviating some of that financial burden."
