Carney Selected Chair of Key Regional Education Council By Matt Smith Frankfort, KY - State Representative, House Majority Floor Leader and lifelong educator John "Bam" Carney will hold yet another key position within the education policy community as chair of the Southern Regional Education Board's Legislative Advisory Council. The Atlanta-based Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) is a nonpartisan organization that works to improve public education at every level. It is consistently recognized as a leader in education policy as well as for providing state leaders with reliable data and research aimed at strengthening student learning through effective state policies. The organization also provides opportunities for state leaders to collaborate in order to share resources and ideas aimed at improving student outcomes. Carney, a lifelong educator who is employed by Taylor County Schools, was selected by his SREB peers for the role. "I'm extremely grateful to have the support and confidence of my fellow lawmakers who, like me, are very passionate about providing a quality education for all of our students," Carney said. "It's an honor for me to represent Taylor and Adair counties in this capacity, where I will work with other leaders to improve education outcomes, from early childhood to higher education and beyond." Before he was elected House Majority Floor Leader, Carney chaired the House Education Committee and has served actively in SREB since 2011. He also served as co-chair of the School Safety Working Group alongside Senator Max Wise, which laid the groundwork for passage of Kentucky's comprehensive school safety measure in 2019, SB 1.
