School Board May meeting is positive and brief

The Adair County School Board Met May 21, 2019 with just a few days to go before commencement and the close of the spring semester.

Seniors receive awards in the ceremony scheduled for Thursday evening, May 23, 2019 at 7pmCT at the ACHS gymnasium.

Commencement Will be held Friday evening, May 24, 2019 at 7pmCT at the ACHS gymnasium.

The meeting began with students participating in the opening session. Special Education students under the direction of Anita Goode, Director, were the stars of the May meeting.

Firefighters Crusade given donation from School Board

Firemen Charlie Crawhorn, Terry Harvey and Donald Hare represented Adair County's fire departments at the board meeting to receive the school system's contribution of over $3,500 to help kick off the Crusade for Children fundraiser taking place this weekend. Adair County firefighters will be working through the Memorial Day holiday to collect for the Crusade.

LWC Track & Field to compete at NAIA Championships Thursday

The Lindsey Wilson track & field team begins competition at the 68th annual Men's and 39th annual Women's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium, 18999 Oak Rd W, Gulf Shores, AL.

Lindsey Wilson is sending 15 total student-athletes to the three-day competition, eight from the men's team and seven qualifiers for the women's team, to participant in 17 events at the championships.

Taylor Bell named US Archery All-American

In the Blue Raider archery program's inaugural season Lindsey Wilson freshman Taylor Bell was named a US Archery All-American. He is the first and only Blue Raider to earn the distinction.

The All-American team is composed of to the Top 25% of archers each Division and Class that participated in both U.S. National Indoors and National Outdoor Collegiate Championships in the same division (maximum 10) and was calculated by taking the combined score from the U.S. National Indoor Championships and the qualification round of the U.S. National Outdoor Collegiate Championships.

Bell was the top-ranked archer in the Men's Bowhunter discipline with 2,512 total points as he topped competitors from NCAA D1, D2, D3 and NAIA institutions.

Georgia-Pacific to expand Bowling Green facility

Warren County facility will add 80,000 square feet to increase paper plate and bowl production, create 50-plus jobs

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin today announced Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products Group will expand its existing operation in Bowling Green with a nearly $100 million investment expected to create more than 50 full-time jobs.

Georgia-Pacific will grow its plant's footprint in the South Central Kentucky Industrial Park by 80,000 square feet to increase production capacity for Dixie plates and bowls. Construction is already underway, and company leaders anticipate the project will be finished in the first half of 2020.

Georgia-Pacific opened the Bowling Green operation in 1992, and the plant has seen several expansions over the past 27 years. The facility produces about one quarter of all the company's paper plates and bowls.

KY State Parks Culinary Trail now open for second year

Frankfort, KY - For the second straight year, guests can sample some tasty regional fare at nine Kentucky State Parks on the 2019 Kentucky State Parks Culinary Trail, including Barren River Lake State Resort Park and Lake Cumberland State Resort Park.

This highly successful trail is part of the Better in the Bluegrass culinary tourism initiative that showcases one-of-a-kind restaurants and chefs specializing in local ingredients and distinctive cuisine. Better in the Bluegrass was highlighted by the last season of Top Chef that took place in Kentucky.

ACHS Class of 2019 Commencement Exercises

Read profiles of the all the seniors graduating in 2019 on Columbia Magazine's special ACHS Class of 2019 Graduation Page.

The Adair County High School Class of 2019 will hold its commencement exercises on Friday, May 24, 2019, at 7pmCT at the John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.

Each senior who is participating in the graduation ceremony has been given two tickets for early entry. Ticket holders may enter the gym at 5:30pmCT. The general public may enter at 6pmCT. The lower two rows on each side of the gymnasium have been designated as handicapped seating and is available on a first come, first serve basis. Accommodations will be provided for those in wheelchairs.

Special music will be performed by the ACHS Band and the ACHS Choir. Colors will be presented by the ACHS Cadet Corps.

How's that for an impression to a possible business? Is that a caring attitude toward people who have invested a lot of money fixing up their property?

Speed limits being enforced by City of Columbia PD

From the Office of Mayor Pam Hoots

In an effort to continue to promote safety and security for all residents of our community, the City of Columbia, installed radar in all police vehicle units during the first quarter of this year.

"This is the first time in over twenty years that the city police has had radar units," said Chief Jason Cross with the Columbia City Police Department. He noted that the units were procured with funding that the city receives from the alcohol beverage tax.

During the past five weeks, close to 60 citations have been written by the department for speeding.

Clerk's office will close Saturday and Monday for holiday

May 21, 2019 was a quiet primary Election Day, but as Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer said, they still have quite a few hours of administrative work to do before the election is officially closed.

Voting machines and records will take the staff another day and a half she said. Then the office will be closed Saturday and Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.
