Commentary: Downtown sets the tone Comments re article 104133 EDA finalizes plan for road will advertise for bids By Vonnie Kolbenschlag A vibrant downtown is a key component of economic development strategy. It sets the tone for how we see ourselves as a community and how others see us. Pretend - you are unfamiliar with Columbia. You walk onto the Public Square - you see some buildings that show the owners have kept them up, but you see some in terrible shape. How's that for an impression to a possible business? Is that a caring attitude toward people who have invested a lot of money fixing up their property? The ditch on one side of the Public Square is filled with dirt and litter and has been for some time. There are unsightly wooden boards across it. I understand Mayor Pam is getting bids to put grating or some such on it. I am glad she understands and is doing something about the appearance of Columbia. The city park and little league park WERE totally trashed. Allowing this deterioration led to vandalism. What did that say about us to a possible business? What did it say to our young people who need a safe place to play? NOW, mayor Pam has hired Craig Lasley and Terry Johnson to help maintain city properties, which were badly in need. Have the volunteer garden workers received praise/recognition from city/county officials? What an asset the gardens are! And so is Columbia's history displayed in the Trabue-Russell House, which is a tourism draw for some people who are interested in what a town offers. I wish that all city and county board members would visit and care about our historic Trabue-Russell House and gardens. I appreciate our mayor and the three city council members who visited during TOUR120 this past weekend. Preservation Kentucky is a state organization encouraging tourism and appreciation of what a community offers. Tourism is part of economic development. If people visit and like what they see, it may be a draw to locate a business. TOUR120 was a project of PreservationKentucky which will continue to promote Columbia's Trabue-Russell House. Columbia Magazine, I think, deserves an award of some sort from the Economic Board, for bringing awareness of the possibilities of this area. And one more thing . . . Will the 'chamber building' be forever the 'Training and Development Building' and your group be Industrial Development as the present sign says.
