Remembering Ed Waggener: Will miss the visits, advice

By Patty Edwards

I have struggled for the words to say to express my deepest sympathy and heartbreak to hear of Ed's passing. It will never be the same to not receive his calls in the early morning hours for our menu for the 'What's cooking' section of Columbia Magazine.

I will terribly miss the frequent visits from Ed and Linda and the joy of their company, laughter, and amusing stories he had experienced and could tell only as a devoted writer could. The knowledgeable advice given to me from him about business moves and changes and doing what works.

Remembering Ed Waggener: Talented writer, gifted journalist

By John Chowning

Linda - I was saddened by the news of Ed's passing, but we're comforted in knowing that he is in his heavenly home with Jesus. No words are ever adequate to express on the occasion of the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

Ed was a brilliant person, talented writer, gifted journalist, and always working to keep the public informed while moving his community and region forward. He will be missed by many. And more than anyone, we know you and your family will miss him.

Be comforted by his legacy, his faith, his love for you and his family, and God's love and grace. Our prayers are with you. Love to you and your family. --John

ACPC now a Pilot School for the Network to Transform Teaching

By Pam Phipps

The Network to Transform Teaching (NT3) is a consortium of over 130 schools seeking to ensure all students have access to accomplished teachers every day.

Since 2016, NT3 pilot schools have tested and implemented changes to strengthen teaching quality and increase the number of board certified teachers across the nation. NT3 relies on the wisdom of practitioners at the school, district and state levels to develop resources and strategies that will bring accomplished certified teaching to scale. One strategy is to encourage and support teachers in becoming National Board Certified. National board certification is one of several ways educators can move their practice to a higher level.

Currently, Adair County has sixteen National Board Teachers with Adair County Primary having six NBCT teachers and two new candidates! Lisa Hayes and Tanya Richards will begin the National Board Certification program this year.

Carol Perkins: Beach trip

Previous installment: Carol Perkins: Travelling with friends

By Carol Perkins

Our beach trip (six ladies) began at eight o'clock on Saturday morning when we headed to Bowling Green to pick up our rented Suburban. We loaded it with six pieces of luggage and small bags tucked in every nook. One brought a six pack of Dr. Pepper as if she couldn't have bought them in Alabama! Only one person could sit in the very back because of a lack of leg room and the overflow of "stuff," which meant three people had to ride in the middle seat.

Before leaving, we drove through Hardee's for breakfast when the rental guy called to tell us he had the key to the vehicle! Imagine getting half way there and realizing we had no key! Finally, we were on our way for a ten-hour drive (which took twelve.)

Remembering Ed Waggener: My Brother

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Written while Ed was hospitalized and family was hanging onto hope for his recovery

My brother Ed Waggener is a very complex person; with a set of abilities all of his own he finished Adair County High School in 3 years. Got into UK Medical school at age 18 lasted one semester and found medicine just was not his calling, Went to "I think I'm right" Johnson Tennessee to Law school for another semester again did not like. Found Butler University in Indianapolis where my sister Jean and her husband Paul lived and graduated from there while working at a Kroger Bakery. Ed could not eat store bought breads for years after that job.

I have to say I'm a little vague of what he did next; I do know that he bought The Edmonton Herald-News from Albert VanZant and I just recently learned that former Speaker of The House Jody Richards was a partner. I understand Ed bought out Jody early on.

Remembering Ed Waggener: High standards and traditions

By Carol Perkins

Many may not know that Ed was editor of the Edmonton Herald News for many years. I really never knew him personally during that time but knew he kept the high standards and traditions of Albert VanZant and Ruth VanZant, both editors for over twenty years. Ed once said how much he admired both of them and how much they taught him.

I feel that way toward Ed. When I began submitting to the online magazine, Ed and I never had a get together to discuss topics/subject matter or expectations. He had read some of my work and took our working relationship from there. Each week, I submitted an article and almost every week he would send back a compliment or a reflection of this own (so did Linda). He made me feel like a better writer than I am.

Ed Waggener, 78, Adair County, KY (1940-2018)

He loved his family, friends and this section of the universe. He was a leader, mentor, teacher, and visionary, always thinking outside the box. ColumbiaMagazine.com was Ed Waggener's magnum opus. His driving force for the last decade of his life was keeping the town updated and amused with stories of its populace. He reported on everything, every day and night, to keep fellow citizens at home and abroad informed about what was happening. From government meetings and politics to bear sightings and our food ways, to obituaries that told of a life well lived, he chronicled them. So long as it was about or related to Columbia and Adair County, KY it was presented as news of the utmost importance. Because to Ed, it all was.

Remembering Ed Waggener: A friendship of letters

By Sharon Whitehurst

My friendship with Ed has been one conducted via email--a sharing of written words. Ed was the epitome of what an editor should be, gently critiquing, refining and encouraging.

I have appreciated Ed's gift of subtle humor, the way he could pounce on a phrase in my essays to highlight the story.

In an era of hasty reporting and sensationalism, Ed's dedication to a more literary style, his integrity, his fairness to readers of various persuasions were noteworthy.

Ed's passing will leave a deep void in many lives--surely in mine. --Sharon
