Remembering Ed Waggener: My Brother By Ralph Roy Waggener Written while Ed was hospitalized and family was hanging onto hope for his recovery My brother Ed Waggener is a very complex person; with a set of abilities all of his own he finished Adair County High School in 3 years. Got into UK Medical school at age 18 lasted one semester and found medicine just was not his calling, Went to "I think I'm right" Johnson Tennessee to Law school for another semester again did not like. Found Butler University in Indianapolis where my sister Jean and her husband Paul lived and graduated from there while working at a Kroger Bakery. Ed could not eat store bought breads for years after that job. I have to say I'm a little vague of what he did next; I do know that he bought The Edmonton Herald-News from Albert VanZant and I just recently learned that former Speaker of The House Jody Richards was a partner. I understand Ed bought out Jody early on. This paper The Edmonton Herald is where it started, he later added The Clay Statesman in Celina, Tn. And soon started our own home towns paper the Columbia Statesman and all three papers where run from an office connected to the Fire Dept in Edmonton. Now I started helping him somewhere after he had all three papers and after trying my hand at selling Malco Products to service stations and garages and made a big mess out of selling because I just did not know how! After stopping at his office one day to see Ed he ask me to go to Glasgow and have one of the papers printed, I did and we worked out a deal that I would take all three paper one at a time to Glasgow Daily Times to be printed and then I addressed them in the fire dept. Ben Gordon Burley helped me I'd go to Celina PO and Ben would go to Columbia PO over about a 28 hour stretch. Ed could tell you about how to spell any word in the Dictionary; he could tell you all the meanings of the word sort of like computer readout before computers where a household word. When he was writing one of his better stories with the head line that went "You don't pull on Superman's Cape and you don't mess with the mayor's men"! This was when one of our mayors got a little too big for his britches and thought he could do whatever he wanted to do! The part that struck me the most was while Ed was typing this story our cousin and partner the late Pete Walker was verbally ad-libbing and Ed would look up, keep on typing and I was on the other side doing the same as Pete and Ed would shake his head and kept on typing, when he finished typing the story that is if my memory serves me right he made a two word correction and sent it to press! As far as I'm concerned this would be just imposable to do! Ed built Waggener-Walker Newspapers into a 16 paper chain and at one time had 112 employs. We grew way too fast and with not near enough experience in business, Ed knew the news business better than anyone period! Qualities of a smart man don't cover every aspect, all have some flaws, I'd guess his worst or maybe his only flaw was sticking with people even when he thought they were wrong, he would stay loyal! He was my brother, my mentor and he taught me a lot over the years, but as brothers often do, try as we might we argued and fought, we understood and we disagreed and when it's family that makes even harder! OH, he was of the far Left leaning and I was a more Right leaning and we did not agree much on politics! At the time of writing this Ed is in the hospital and not in to good of shape, he is said to not have much of a chance of making it, we can only hope for the best and keep on praying for his recovery! I could write a book about Ed but this can give you a little picture of his ability's as a great writer and news man! He taught me to get "who, what when, where and why for the bases of any story or cutline! Editor's note: I wrote this a couple days before Ed died intended to use in my "Smiles" now I want it on his Columbia Magazine. One other thing my brother was famous for was his short cuts to anywhere he goes, Using Ed's short cuts you could drive to ether Louisville or Lexington in less than 4 hours. I'm one of those people that go to point A to point B as fast as I can, Ed, that's a different story, he'd like to take it all in see something new or just find another way to get there.
