Remembering Ed Waggener: A friendship of letters

By Sharon Whitehurst

My friendship with Ed has been one conducted via email--a sharing of written words. Ed was the epitome of what an editor should be, gently critiquing, refining and encouraging.

I have appreciated Ed's gift of subtle humor, the way he could pounce on a phrase in my essays to highlight the story.

In an era of hasty reporting and sensationalism, Ed's dedication to a more literary style, his integrity, his fairness to readers of various persuasions were noteworthy.

Ed's passing will leave a deep void in many lives--surely in mine. --Sharon
