Remembering Ed Waggener: High standards and traditions

By Carol Perkins

Many may not know that Ed was editor of the Edmonton Herald News for many years. I really never knew him personally during that time but knew he kept the high standards and traditions of Albert VanZant and Ruth VanZant, both editors for over twenty years. Ed once said how much he admired both of them and how much they taught him.

I feel that way toward Ed. When I began submitting to the online magazine, Ed and I never had a get together to discuss topics/subject matter or expectations. He had read some of my work and took our working relationship from there. Each week, I submitted an article and almost every week he would send back a compliment or a reflection of this own (so did Linda). He made me feel like a better writer than I am.

A few weeks ago Susan Chambers and I had a book reveal for our new work entitled Edmonton (1940-2018) and imagine my surprise when I looked up (at Barn Lot Theater) and there stood Ed and Linda. That was the first time we had actually talked in person after all these years. I thanked him for giving me an audience and he thanked me for my contributions.

I'm so happy that I was given that time to tell him how grateful I was. Ed was a creative genius. We will all miss him. --Carol
