He had dairy and beef cows, operated a dozer for many years and did light construction work. LWC Swimming in MSC Preseason Coaches' Polls By Charlie Balcom The Lindsey Wilson men's swim team was picked to finish third in the Mid-South Conference in 2016-17 according to the MSC Preseason Coaches' Poll released by the conference office on Thursday. The Lindsey Wilson women's swim team was picked to finish tied for first place in the Mid-South Conference in the MSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Blue Raiders men accumulated 17 total voting points from the panel of head coaches around the conference. Last season, the Blue Raiders men finished third at the Mid-South Conference Championships. For the women, Cumberlands captured the MSC title with the lady Blue Raiders finishing in second place. Improvements to Kennedy Bridge are nearly complete Downtown Crossing: Bridge expected to reopen to southbound traffic in 1 week Click on headline for complete story From Commonwealth News Service LOUISVILLE, KY (Thu 29 Sep 2016) -Extensive improvements to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge are nearly complete, with the bridge scheduled to reopen to I-65 South traffic in October. When the bridge reopens to southbound traffic, direct access from I-65 South to I-64 East, I-64 West and I-71 North will be restored. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said crews with Walsh Construction are on track to open the Kennedy Bridge to southbound traffic in about 1 weeks. If the weather cooperates, the Kennedy Bridge should be open to three lanes of traffic by early Monday, October 10. When that happens, two lanes will carry through traffic to I-65 South. LWC Men's Swimming finishes second at LWC Fall Frenzy By Charlie Balcom The Lindsey Wilson men's swimming team finished in second place in the final standings following the third and final session of the LWC Fall Frenzy on Saturday evening at the Holloway Center Natatorium. The Blue Raiders racked up 990 total team points at the invitational, finishing only behind event winner Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) with 1,109.50 points. The Blue Raiders (13-1, 4-1 MSC) then face Pikeville (Ky.) on Wednesday night. Lindsey Wilson defeated Shawnee State (Ohio) on Sept. 24. The Blue Raiders held the Bears to a .000 attacking percentage in the straight-sets victory. Makenzie Montano recorded 24 assists against Shawnee State. She now has 3,144 career assists and is 35 shy of passing Sarah Kline for the fourth-most in Lindsey Wilson program history. LWC Volleyball cruises past Pikeville 3-0 By Charlie Balcom Pikeville, KY - The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team cruised to its 13th straight-sets victory of the season on Wednesday night as the Blue Raiders took down Pikeville 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-11) at UPIKE Gymnasium. Lindsey Wilson (15-1, 6-1 Mid-South Conference) never trailed in the match and has now won 20 straight against the Bears (12-8, 1-4 MSC) dating back to the 2005 season. After a tight opening set where Lindsey Wilson pulled away late, the Blue Raiders dominated the final two frames, allowing just 16 total points to the Bears en route to outhitting the hosts .341 to .025 on the night. Great musical entertainment, 1899: the night Columbia rocked By JIM On Saturday evening, March 11th, 1899, Columbia was a happening place. Word had spread like wildfire via the pages of the News that the Columbia Brass band, supplemented by various others, would give an entertainment that evening - and the folks came in droves. Without a doubt, buggies, surreys, phaetons, and jolt wagons as well as horses, mules, and ponies were double- and triple parked around the Square that evening almost sixscore years ago. Mr. Gordon Crump, 88, Adair Co., KY (d. 25 Sep 2016) He was a decorated Korean War veteran and a longtime journalist. His career start with the Hart County Herald in Munfordville at age 16. He later worked for the Daily News in Bowling Green, on The Stars and Stripes, the Lexington Herald, the Glasgow Daily Times, and the Danville Advocate-Messenger. In Adair County, he may be more well known as the editor of the Columbia Daily Statesman but also as the editor in chief for Waggener-Walker Newspapers (a chain which formerly operated in Columbia, Kentucky and published weekly newspapers in a dozen or so towns in Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee). In his last years, he a beloved resident of the Clay Ridge Community of Adair County.
