This is the fourth installment of the "Spring Fishing Fever" series of fishing articles, which detail productive fishing opportunities across Kentucky.

By Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Although the redbud trees haven't bloomed yet, it isn't too early to start fishing for crappie.

Black crappie are likely along rocky banks now in lakes that have them.

"With the water temperatures still in the mid-40s, white crappie are likely staging in deeper water right now," said Jeff Crosby, central fisheries district biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "With the longer photoperiod and the warmer temperatures on the way, they will be moving up to the shallows."

Mr.Reed releases letter sent to all Adair District employees

Re: Inappropriate contact between employees and students

Please see the special notification I sent to all employees of Adair County Schools today, March 26, 2015:
"In the past few days and weeks there have been numerous news accounts in regional and statewide media related to inappropriate contact between employees and students in public schools across the state. As superintendent, I must remind you of the risks involved in communicating with students in any manner other than through district servers.

Communicating with students via social media can be a risky proposition. There is an abundance of rumors circulating throughout our community regarding investigations of employees in nearby districts and subsequent termination/resignation due inappropriate and unethical access of web-based material and possible inappropriate contact. I feel the need to remind all employees of Adair County Schools that each of you is held to the very highest levels of professionalism and ethical conduct. Our Adair County Board of Education and our community at large expects nothing less than a thorough investigation of any allegations. I can assure you of swift disciplinary action if called for, and full disclosure to news media in the event of documented inappropriate contact with students on the part of any employee in our district."
Alan W. Reed, Superintendent
Adair County Schools, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY 42728. Phoein 270-384- 2476

Gary Rose: We need to be aware of all road users

Gary Rose writes:
Pen is correct, all of us need to be aware that because of our local environment, it is not just cyclists that may be around the next curve or over the next hill.

Pen did a much better job at asking motorists to be aware of ALL other road users than I did, I was focused on cyclists at the time and I dropped the ball.

Thank you, Pen.

Another vulnerable group on highways: Motorcyclists

Old Coddger writes:
Very good thoughts Pen, and so very true. You did however leave out one group that are very numerous on our highways, that being the motorcyclist. For some reason and I do not understand it, many drivers seem to not see, not care or think a motorcycle can stop on a dime, thus putting riders is grave danger.

We all need to be more alert and pay attention when we are driving, what ever it is. Please don't text and drive, even voice texting is very distracting and takes your attention off the road. Looking away for a second or two, you can very easily travel 100-150 feet and that is plenty of distance to run over someone and hurt or kill them.

New self appointed vice president of South Central Printing

In a family which has had great dogs, they're already calling the friendly mature shelter dog "the best dog ever," maybe even better than Tippy or Corky, the latter a history making dog who was first to discover, with his Uncle Michael Campbell, a just dropped sinkhole on the John Lowe urban farm

By Uncle Ed

He was the talk of the Circle R last night. The dog who adopted my nephew, Doug at Green River Animal Shelter on Tuesday, has taken over the family and is now a self-appointed Vice President of South Central Printing.

He had a shelter name of "Red," for his unusual coloration. There was a bit of behind the scenes negotiations by Sydney Waggener, who wanted a black puppy, but "Red" was the chosen.

Sydney did name the dog. Now he's "Bandit." - Bandit Dog Waggener. He follows Doug everywhere. Though there's no doubt where Bandit's primary loyalties are, he makes friends with everybody.

Letter: Roads are used at many different speeds

Pen writes:
Gary raises a really good point about caring for the cyclists you see on the roads as if they might be family. However, in a county with such a rich agricultural tradition, everyone should also remember that our roads are used by far more than just cars and bicycles.

Always drive knowing that you might meet someone using the road at an entirely different speed than you are: tractors, combines, trailers, horse-pulled carriages, and even the occasional farm animal who left the confines of his pasture, not to mention emergency workers, construction crews, and officers making traffic stops. Any of these are always entirely possible on roads in southern Kentucky, some of them even more in spring.

For their safety and yours, assume there might be someone stopped or going a lot slower on the other side of the next curve. --Pen

Dear Motorists,

I've been meaning to write to you for a while, but have not got around to it.

On that bicycle in front of you is a person. That person may be your son or daughter, maybe your mother or father. That person could be your brother or a sister. That person could be your boss, co-worker, your neighbor. That person has someone at home who whats that person to come home safe.

Writer asks about bicycle helmet safety: Are they good enough?

Rickie Williams has asked about the helmets being used by today's bicyclist.

Here in the course of less than 72 hours Adair County has encountered two severe head trauma accidents, he noted.

He said that there are reports that at least in one of the accidents, the helmet did crack. "In one aspect, that is good in that it absorbed some of the impact. But my question is this" Are those bicycle helmets good enough when the speed of the highway ridden bicycles is taken into account?
