Oregon reader learns more about family in JIM Neatsville story

Carmen Bryant writes:
I was surprised and pleased to find this remembrance, especially since it was written by the grandson of Rudolph Neat. Rudolph Neat is the gggg-grandfather of my husband, and therefore the 5g-grandfather of my children. I had his name in the genealogical records but knew nothing about him. Thanks for posting this on the Internet! And I would be happy to learn anything more about Rudolph Neat and his family. Carmen Bryant, way out west in Oregon - Carmen Bryant

2014 KMEA State Championship: 1) Russell 2) ADAIR 3) Bourbon

Big prize stays in neighborhood. Russell Co. Laker Band wins Top Class A Band trophy 2014

Shamarie Claiborne sent word that neighboring Russell County High School won 1st Place, ADAIR won 2nd Place, and Bourbon County, under the direction of former ADAIR member Eric Hale, was 3rd, at the KMEA State Competition at Madison Central High School, Richmond, KY, Saturday night, November 1, 2014.

"Of course we had hoped for the championship at State," she said. "But we're cool that if it had to go to another school, it stayed so close to home."

The ADAIR Band has one huge event remaining: The Bands of America national competition in Indianapolis, IN. More will be posted on that as received.

JIM: News from the News, early November, 1914

The November 4, 1914 edition of the Adair County News carried reports of a quiet Hallowe'en and a quiet election (unlike the year in the 50's when Judge Montgomery declared martial law because of dynamite being used for firecrackers in Jefferson Alley; that's a later story) , as well as several newsletters from around the county and an entertainment review.
Click on headline for business news, Epicurean Kentuckian of that day, and news from Gradyville, Rugby, Edith, Craycraft, Dirigo, even 'Neatsburg' and other wonderful communities of 1914, recovered via time warp by JIM

By JIM

Hallowe'en was so subdued it received but brief mention--eight short lines of newsprint. County Judge Herriford, a strict law and order man who brooked no nonsense, "ordered that the lights [in Columbia] burn all night, and officers were on the watch." So effective were the lights and so vigilant the lawmen on duty, "The turning over of the old iron safe in front of the Bank of Columbia" consisted the entirety of the mischief wrought in town.

The election on Tuesday, November 3rd, "was perhaps the quietest ever held in Adair County." Still, "a good vote was polled throughout the county," and the front page of the News trumpeted the "glorious news" that Democrats Beckham and Camden had won statewide elections and that native son Rollin Hurt had handily carried the day in his quest for a seat on the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

The weather: Big Frost this morning in Annexed Green Hills

Weather Diary for 2 Nov 2014

There's word from over across the creek in Annexed Green Hills of Columbia that there was a big frost this morning.

Probably a bigger one on the other side of Green Hills Road, nearer the creek, and not (yet?) a part of Columbia. - CM

Ben Arnold: How much of schools' $30 million budget is Payroll

Comments re article 70858 Link School board election an excellent article

Ben Arnold writes:
I wonder what percent of this budget is payroll? Probably a majority. Perhaps the new payroll tax will bring in much more money to Columbia than reported? i.e. the total payroll tax paid by Columbia workers will be much more than reported! - Ben Arnold
Need help on that one, Mr. Arnold: Maybe someone in Adair County Schools District administration could give a quick answer. Hate for the information to wait until they're open next. - EW. (Ben Arnold, the writer, as Everybody in Columbia surely knows now, is the Write-In Candidate for Mayor of Columbia, KY)

Charles Marshburn: Where is good ole American mudslinging?

Comment on Election 2014

By Charles Marshburn
Who appears ready to stir things up

How about some last minute good ole American mudslinging in this election! Everyone understands that most folks have parents and grandparents. Some 40% of Americans attend church on a weekly basis and somebody in the church must be officers in order for the church to be properly staffed.

What about the political issues and qualifications for the office? What about the intentions of those running to make a difference in the city or county? Some of the "from off" population would like to know "STUFF"! No guts, no glory! - Charles Marshburn

Chuck Hinman: IJMA. Shopping gone wrong

Chuck goes on a shopping binge for seven pair of new socks to replace all his old socks but bras bar his way.
Next earlier Chuck Hinman column - Husbands, Stay Out Of The Kitchen: Advice For Retirement

By Chuck Hinman

I go on a crazy 'lights out' shopping binge every now and then that I can't justify later and yet it seemed so reasonable at the time. Ever been there or done that?

Last week without batting an eye I bought two pair of pricey shoes (I won't tell you the price) reasoning that not one pair of the sixteen pair of shoes on the shoe rack outside my clothes closet door are comfortable. I'm not rich but after 88 years I certainly deserve some decent-fitting shoes. Wsh!

Tom Chaney: Organic Tobacco or Hosannas to the Herb Divine

Tom reports on the Sante Fe Natural Tobacco Company which seeks to avoid chemicals and make a product similar to the tobacco consumed a hundred or so years ago. This column first appeared 1 November 2009.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Welcome to Catfish Bend

By Tom Chaney

My erstwhile editor, partner, brother-in-law came in The Bookstore t'other day and flung a promising book my way. I never know whether he is trying to brain me or give me a book I ought to either sell or read or all three.

After I recovered from a direct hit, I picked up the bookish missile. As I browsed the tome, I realized it had some potential although it was a book written by an industry touting itself. The book is Organic Tobacco Growing in America: and Other Earth-Friendly Farming by Mike Little, Fielding Daniel, Mark Smith, and Jim Haskins. Published by the Sunstone Press of Santa Fe, New Mexico, it is an unabashed account of the work of the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company in getting tobacco on the market free of chemicals.

Carol Perkins: What happened in Vegas

Comparing Las Vegas to Edmonton, travel writer Carol Perkins finds the food pretty good and a fair value, but on the real issues, the price and value of a spa - Edmonton/Glasgow wins hands down. As usual, Carol Perkins fulfills a compulsion in all of us to know what's down the next road, how's the eats in another location, and what the natives are like elsewhere(s). *(Continued as footnote - this column is too interesting interrupt any longer!
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: (TB Posted)

By Carol Perkins

Our annual trip to Las Vegas for a trade show for Guy and pleasure for me was, as always, relaxing and busy.

This year we stayed at the Mirage, once famous for the white tigers but now display white cubs. Remember Siegfield and Roy? Home of some of the best food on the strip, I managed to enjoy samples of most of it.

Link: School board election - an excellent article

A suggested read-before-you vote article

This is an excellent piece from WFPL, the voice of the Louisville Free Public Library, which may be of interest to those in Districts in the 7-County area which have local school board races:

When you vote for School Board member, what are you voting for?

In Adair County, KY, five candidates, three in Division 1, the south end of the county, and two in Division 3, are on the ballot. This story might provide insight on the complexity of the job, and the character one might want to examine in a character before pulling the lever on a job which oversees an almost $30,000,000 per year budget - in an employment sector which is now Adair County's number one industry, education, and, with the $60,000,000 budget at Lindsey Wilson College, and other educational enterprises here, would make it very possibly the very first $100,000,000 a year component of the local economy. Happy Tale for 2 Nov 2014 - It was one of those days

It was a beautiful fall day, one when there are views from her vantage point reaching 30 mile or so (by road) from high on Sparksville Road. It was a great day for a hike, but as usual at Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, the prologue to the pleasurable event was problematic, made more so by the inquisitive and somewhat mischeivous nature of the dogs. But as with most Happy Tails, this one ends on a calming note.

Every morning when I wake up I lie in bed for a while making a mental agenda of "Things to Do" for the day. I play out in my mind what needs to be done. Then I get up and if I do half of what's on my list I'm lucky. Usually if I do one or two things I'm having a good day. So Thursday wasn't any different.
