Letter: Why do people do the things they do?

I wonder why people do the things they do?

I learned early not to ask much out of life as I most likely wasn't going to get it. But I don't understand why some people don't want me to have what little I do.

I had a maple tree in a flowerpot on the porch at work. It had come up between the rock that is a step and the porch, and was maybe three inches tall when I noticed it about three years ago. It had grown to around fifteen inches tall and I was going to put in my yard this coming spring.

Well, that little simple plan is now in tatters as someone has stolen the maple tree . . . I don't know if they even knew it was a maple tree as the leaves had fallen, or if they thought it was just a useless stem and they wanted the pot. Either way, it saddened my day to discover this small piece of my life was gone.

CJ: The pardon power in Kentucky explained

By Emma Austin, Louisville Courier Journal

Former Gov. Matt Bevin made national headlines this week when he issued hundreds of pardons and commutations during his final days in office, including one to free a man convicted of homicide whose brother held a political fundraiser for Bevin.

A pardon does not indicate innocence and usually is issued with the assumption that the convicted person has been rehabilitated. The pardon power lies completely in the executive branch \0x2060-- at the state level, in the hands of the governor.

Amendments to wildlife regulations proposed

Kentucky Press News Service

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission proposed new bear hunting regulations and new procedures for captive cervid facilities at its quarterly meeting on December 6, 2019.

In bear-related business, the commission recommended opening certain hunter access areas and wildlife management areas to the bear chase season and the bear hunting with dogs season. Wildlife management areas would not open for the bear chase season until the third Saturday in August due to current leash requirements on these areas. Public lands in the Daniel Boone National Forest are not open to bear chase or bear hunting with dogs seasons.

The commission also proposed delineating Wayne County as a separate bear zone.

Letter: Photo analysis

Michael Potter writes:
The base of the building relative to the sidewalk from right to left indicates downhill. From the pole to the far left the relative height difference between the sidewalk and the foreground is relatively constant. The car on the right has no water at the base of the tires.

If it was standing water, the length of the right front leg of the dog would suggest, relative to the sidewalk/foreground, there should be water above the sidewalk on the far left. My guess: the dog is laying down in the road. --Michael

Bonner Scholars Harris and Buchanan lead Coats For Kids drive

By Travis Smith

More than 50 Adair County children will have a warmer winter thanks to the work of two Lindsey Wilson College students.

Lindsey Wilson senior Bailey Harris of Columbia and sophomore Haley Buchanan of Lexington led an effort to collect 52 winter coats for children of low-income families. The coats were distributed Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Adair County Head Start for children and their siblings.

Harris and Buchanan continued a tradition that was started eight years ago by students in the Lindsey Wilson Bonner Scholars program, according to Lindsey Wilson Director of Civic Engagement & Student Leadership Natalie Vickous.

"It means so much to me that a Bonner started this initiative after seeing a need in the community," Vickous said. "Every year a new Bonner steps up to lead the drive and keep it going. Having a warm winter coat is a basic need that many of us take for granted, and I love that our students and community work together to meet that need for the children at Adair County Headstart. It's one of our favorite initiatives every year."

Letter: Hurts the innocent

Theresa Ingermann writes:
Not all people that have "run-ins" with law enforcement are guilty when trashing them online or in the paper only hurts the innocent. Have you ever been in a situation where you are absolutely innocent but have to prove it in court? You are not innocent until proven guilty it is the opposite of that. Until you have been through that you will never know the feeling of looking at everyone in a court room knowing what was being said about you were all lies but until you drag it out to trial you can not prove your innocence. No one listens to you or your attorney. Think about it. Really, stop and think about it. --Theresa

Letter: Perp walk mainly contributes to gossip

Robert Johnson writes:
Having an arrested/accused person subjected to a perp walk, defined as: "A practice in American law enforcement of taking an arrested suspect through a public place, creating an opportunity for the media to take photographs and video of the event" will not contribute much to keeping our community safer. However, it will do much to increase the small town gossip factor exponentially. --Robert Johnson

Fiscal Court approves Sheriff's Office 2020 Budget

Fiscal Court approved the 2020 Budget for the Adair County Sheriff’s Office at the first December meeting Tuesday evening. The only major change in the budget this year is the increase in equipment of $10,000 for the purchase of Kevlar vests for the deputies.

According to County Judge Executive Gale Cowan, "The ones they have are outdated and not fitted to the deputies. He will try to obtain a grant for the purchase of the vests but wanted to include it in the budget in case he didn’t get the grant."

The excess fees for the Sheriff's Office are also up around $6,000.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be Monday, December 30, 2019 at 4pmCT in the Courthouse Annex. Normally this meeting is held on Tuesday but was planned for Monday due to the holiday.
