KY Afield Outdoors: Be ready for fishing opportunities

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Planning a fishing trip more than a couple days ahead of time can be a gamble in late winter when the weather is a mixed bag and the favorable conditions here today may be gone tomorrow.

With some advance preparation, you can be ready to grab what you need and go when that friend calls at daybreak or the impulse strikes and the schedule allows for a last-minute trip.

Performing regular maintenance on your reels can prevent catastrophic problems or costly repairs down the road.

Free soil testing in Feb/Mar 2017

By Teresa Bright

The Adair County Soil Conservation District will be sponsoring FREE soil testing during the months of February and March of 2017. All Adair County landowners are eligible to receive eight (8) FREE soil samples. The free samples are eligible only through the UK Adair County Cooperative Extension Service. Soil probes for collecting samples may be borrowed from the Extension Office at 409 Fairgrounds Street in Columbia.

When taking soil samples, remember that the results of a soil test are only as good as the sample itself. Samples should be taken at a depth of 3-4 inches for no-till production and 6-8 inches when the ground is to be tilled. Take at least 10 cores samples from smaller fields to compile one sample for the field. Larger fields may require as many as 30 core samples per field. Try to limit soil samples to 20 acres or less when possible. Avoid pulling core samples from drains, near roadways, around feeding areas, and where manure has been applied within the last month. The core samples should be placed into a plastic bucket or paper bag, mixed well, and allowed to air dry.

If you have any questions about how to take a correct soil sample, contact the Extension Office at 270-384-2317.

Spring is coming in, season inventory of March flowers shows

Iris are happy, and hyacinths - both grape & regular, ready to bloom - bloom. Tulips by steps are ready

By Joyce Coomer

I did a quick survey of the yard this morning and if all the March flowers that are budded to bloom bloom at the same time I'll have a nice swath of yellow along the side of the yard.

Grape hyacinths are up as are a couple of regular hyacinths, and the iris look happy.

There are now four tulips by the step at the shop and six or eight hyacinths up on the other side of the porch. - Joyce M. Coomer

Mitzi Bault: Let's work together to solve problems

Let's work as a community to fix problems. Go to your neighbor tell them if you have a problem. They might not know; maybe your dogs are chasing cattle, chickens, or other animals of your neighbors, and sometimes the first time at fixing does not work. Either way, let's practice the Golden Rule and be a good pet owner and be a good neighbor. Let's work together.

Kentucky is very relaxed on animal laws.
