Scenic Metcalfe Co., KY: Honeysuckle fence

2016-05-15 - Cody Trent Road, Metcalfe Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Pink and red honeysuckle forms a lightly tended fence along Cody Trent Road in Metcalfe County, a secluded lane which the unwary might think goes to Sulphur Well - but it doesn't. It dead ends. Metcalfe Countians seem to do more with natural fence rows, from utilizing Eastern Red Cedar for fencing, windbreaks, and habitat for birds, than almost anywhere else. And nothing could be prettier - and maybe more impenetrable, than this dense boundary line. - EW/LW

Jon Halsey: On observing Peace Officers Memorial Day

President has proclaimed May 21-25 as "Peace Officers Memorial Day," May 15, 2016.

By Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

I am sadden by the lack of attention that continues to be given to the week in May that has been designated by Public Law and first signed by President John F Kennedy and reaffirmed every year since by each succeeding President as "Peace Officers Memorial Day."

Letter: How did Montpelier get its name?

Phil Hanna writes:
Do you know where Montpelier get its name? I have not found this in the Kentucky Place Names books. Montpelier in France was a Huguenot stronghold; I had wondered if some of the settlers in that area where of Huguenot background in the same way that Daniel Trabue was of Huguenot background. --Phil Hanna
Phil, Thanks to one of our readers, we have an answer to this question:

We have lost too much in the name of progress

Joyce M. Coomer

Years ago, farmers weren't OCD about mowing EVERYTHING on their farm into the ground as they are now.

Groves of trees were left in pastures as shade for livestock, which did the "mowing" of the pastures. In the process of grazing, livestock would graze around a blackberry sprout and in a few years there would be a nice blackberry bramble with plenty of berries. Farmers didn't use herbicides and pesticides (other than some "bean dust" when beetles were threatening the pole bean crop), and didn't keep fencerows obsessively cleaned out.

Eleven graduates of free electrician prep class pass tests

After end of 10 weeks of instruction, the eleven students in Chris Bennett class have passed either their Journey or Master Electrician test.

On March 22, 2016 the free electrician test prep class given by local electrical inspector Chris Bennett ended its 10 week run. Since that time 11 of the students have passed either their Journeyman or Master] Electrician test. These electricians worked very hard in class and really impressed instructor Chris Bennett.

JIM - Lindsey Wilson in 1903, one of greatest blessings ever

Historian JIM finds staunch Baptist and Adair County News editor Charles Snow Harris' comments on the LW Training School's impact an example of the newspaper at its shining best, a clarion voice of unity and progress

Toward the end of 1903, the rumor mill went into overdrive, informing whomever might take a listen that the new Methodist training school, still under construction in Columbia, would not be finished in time to open as planned early in the quickly approaching new year.

Enter the Adair County News, booming forth from the editorial bully pulpit to smack down such prattlings, telling one and all that yes, the school would indeed be ready to accept students on January 4th, exactly on schedule. The foreman in charge of the work, via an indirect quote, gave assurance that "on or before the 25th of December the college building and dormitory will be complete in all their parts and the keys turned over to the building committee." The piece went on to state that extra workmen were laboring night and day and that "No one need fear its completion..."
