Billy Joe Fudge: On science and frostflowers Billy Joe Fudge writes: Leave it up to science to struggle to explain what has already been explained. Okay guys and gals here it is again: A. warm, water soaked soil, B. dry, cold(below 32 degree), still air, C. dead, vertical tick weed stems capable of wicking its interior strutted with warm, liquid water, D. and then under the pressure of warm expanding water on the interior and the cold air causing the exterior of the Tick Weed to contract, a rupture is created allowing the warm liquid to slowly ooze out into the cold, dry, still air creating Frost Flowers. Thank you very much and innocent until proven guilty. - Billy Joe FudgeComments re article 76625 Frost Flowers caused by fungus 2015-07-23 21:49:43 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Frost Flowers
KY Parks sets Guidelines: Confederate Battle Flag Merchandise By Gil Lawson FRANKFORT, KY (July 23, 2015) - The Kentucky Department of Parks has adopted a policy in which it will no longer sell Confederate "battle" flags at park gift shops. Under the policy, no merchandise will be sold that features the Confederate battle flag, such as caps or shirts. Items that feature both the U.S. and the Confederate battle flags, educational material such as books, DVDS and other interpretive media that put the flag in historical context, may be sold at the gift shops. The Civil War battle re-enactments held annually at certain parks are not affected under the guidelines. In addition, future contracts with individuals and organizations that provide services or rent facilities at state parks will be subject to this policy. Kentucky's park policy is modeled after one recently established by the National Park Service in the wake of the shootings last month in South Carolina. 2015-07-23 20:47:28 | Comments | Printable version

Frost Flowers caused by fungus? European researchers have identified a particular fungus, Exidiopsis effusa, which they believe is responsible for the formation of the uniquely beautiful ice structures that show up on dead branches on certain cold mornings. For some inexplicable reason, they insist on referring to the structures as "hair ice," instead of the locally accepted and much more poetic "frost flowers," coined by local expert Billy Joe Fudge. KY Afield Outdoors: Safety important during high water Rain swollen lakes and rivers make water safety more important than ever By Lee McClellan Frankfort, KY -- The middle of July usually means less grass mowing because of the parched, brown conditions of most lawns. Streams normally run low and clear in mid-summer and concern about drought clouds people's minds. The Kentucky River at Frankfort looks like a flowing ribbon of foamy chocolate milk. This week, Buckhorn Lake in eastern Kentucky's Leslie and Perry counties rose 13 1/2 feet above normal summer pool while central Kentucky's Taylorsville Lake swelled to 18 1/2 feet above it. The unusually high water makes for unsafe conditions for boating, canoeing and kayaking as well as swimming on Kentucky lakes and rivers.
