KY Afield Outdoors: The redear sunfish spawn is here

This is the seventh installment of the "Spring Fishing Fever" series of fishing articles.

By Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - It is the time of year when the big "bull" redear sunfish move shallow to spawn, sending a shiver of excitement through the ranks of many Kentucky anglers.

When the big redear sunfish move up to spawn, it produces some of the best fishing of the year. The ability of hefty redear sunfish to use their saucer-shaped bodies to pull against a rod is legendary. If this species grew to 10 pounds, it might be nearly impossible to land one.

March brought record snowfall across Kentucky and April came along with huge rainfall that set some one-day records in central Kentucky. This spring has proven tough for Kentucky anglers.

However, it is Derby time in the Bluegrass with air temperatures approaching 80 degrees by early next week. A stable weather pattern with warming air temperatures and water temperatures ranging from 65 to 68 degrees make ideal conditions for redear sunfish.

And for siblings Grace Roy, David Staton and James Staton, attending SCC has not only been a family affair, but also a bit of a competition.

"If I hadn't moved here, I wouldn't have even come to college," said David Staton. "Having the SCC Russell Center here, and having my sister and brother pushing and challenging me, has made all the difference for me."

Here are their stories:

Finding new ways to review for KPREP

Mrs. Waddell has figured it out!

By Shamarie Claiborne
Adair Co. Board of Education District Migrant Recruiter / Media Promotions / Technology

With the KPREP right around the corner, 6th grade Science Teacher Debra Waddell, has been coming up with creative ideas to not only keep her students focused at this time of the year, but also to reinforce core content. Her students have been working on math questions by looking at statistical data collected from an experiment. They dropped pennies from a specific height, then recorded where they landed within several bulls eyes. The final step was plotting the information on a line plot, looking for gaps, clusters, skews and outliers! Not only were her students focused and reinforcing past lessons, but they were having fun doing it! Kudos Mrs. Waddell!

Shannon Sexton: Entire mayoral election issue is bizarre

'Proving a point is good for bruised feelings and ego, but not always for the purse strings. Judge Vance basically said a flawed system - not a flawed individual. Nobody needs to prove their innocence here - we just need to prove we can do better next time. We all need constructive criticism and some of what we are getting has been a long time coming.' - SHANNON SEXTON. She also asks if now isn't the time to talk about merged city and county government.

By Shannon Sexton
Personal commentary

I'm a business owner and like most business owners, I experience both the highs and lows that come with the territory. I'm young. I don't know everything. I make mistakes. I try to learn from those mistakes and be better tomorrow. My business partner, employees and my family depend on me to make good sound decisions so our business can continue to be successful. With that said, this entire mayoral election issue is bizarre to me on so many levels.

Debbie Willis writes:
What is up with this town and the price of GAS!! Went to Kroger in Russell Springs last night and gas was $2.37 a gallon, I used my Kroger card and got it ten cents cheaper. Most gas stations outside of Columbia are $2.49 per gallon and here it is $2.69. These places are trying to RIP us a new one! We need a Dairy Queen instead of so many gas stations anyway (of course this is strictly my opinion!) - Debbie Willis

Billy Joe Fudge: Would have to look at rule re: Quorum

Comments re article 74920 Kenny Absher Friend of Court should file motion to dismiss

By Billy Joe Fudge

I'm no lawyer, but I am very cognizant of the importance of a quorum to the integrity of a board.

A board, whether elected or appointed, represents a larger body and votes on matters in their absence by their permission based upon particular rules and guidelines.

Whether all the members being present and with consideration of the two recusals still constitutes a quorum; I don't know. - Billy Joe Fudge

Thanks, Annette Richards - To the best of my knowledge, you are right, although the Jeep was in the early stages of remodeling. As you and patrons on Columbia, KY Rural Route 2 remember, the vehicle was painted gray when finished and had different window treatment. Route 2 went, generally, from Columbia to Lampton Lane, then to KY 80, then to Bliss Post Office, then to Gradyville Post Office, then to Weed, Post Office and across Weed Ridge to Sparksville, and then back through the Flat Woods on KY 61 to Columbia. - ED Waggener

Sheila Blair responds to Ben Arnold

Sheila Blair writes:
I was not aware of the seal missing from the absentee machine. If you are speaking of the e-scan machine, it is only used election day to scan the paper ballots after they are taken from a locked box by the County Board of Elections. The absentee vote counting process starts at 10amC. on election day. The scanning of the ballots is the last step in this process, which would have been later in the afternoon. I am in no way trying to be disrespectful, but to me the seal being on the machine is irrelevant. The votes are recorded on the MBB card, even if the door were to be open on the machine, the results of the ballots scanned would not change. As I have stated before, the door of the machine is locked with a key and then sealed. The only thing that anyone could can access to are voted ballots, which can not tampered with. Sincerely, Sheila Blair
