John Campbell: A brief history of Rudy's Lad & Dad

By John Campbell

Here is some information on the Rudy's Lad & Dad which was in Columbia on the Square in the 1960s. The exact dates are uncertain to the members of the family that we checked with.

Rudy began working for his uncle, Ruel Wooten in 1951 only on Saturdays. Wooten's Department Store was then located in the corner near the current 1st & Farmer's Bank location.

Mr. Wooten moved the men's/boy's merchandise across the square to the location next to Coomer's Restaurant. This business was known as Rudy's Lad and Dad. It wasn't long after that until the shop beside it (my source of information recalls that it was a fabric shop) was purchased, the wall torn out, and Wooten's relocated.

Ruel and Runa Wooten sold the business to W. C. Loy in 1969. It was at this time that the store changed its name to Loy's Department Store and Rudy's Lad and Dad was phased out and that name dropped even though the same men's/boy's merchandise was offered and the personnel remained the same.

Mr. Loy continued the operation of the store until his death in the late 70's/early 80s. His son, Michael and wife Deborah (the daughter of Porter Wagoner) kept the store in operation until around 2005.

Individuals who worked for Mr. Wooten and Mr. Loy (not including seasonal workers, part-time, and short term help): Alma Garmon, Myrtle Hoots, Frances Farris, Opal Knifley, Liz Harmon, Cecilia Squires, Delores Parson, Audra Campbell and Rudy Campbell (Audra was married to Rudy's brother, Donald... not Rudy).

Rudy's Lad & Dad front 'license plate' - (no, it was store sign)

2015-04-30 - Columbia, KY - Photo from John Campbell collection.
Rudy Campbell and Mr. & Mrs. Wooten were innovative advertisers and promoters. This was a version of a vanity plate before Kentucky started selling them. It would be affixed to the front license brackets and advertised Rudy's Lad & Dad. - CM. Actually, no. SEE: Rudy's 'license plate' actually the store sign

Young Rudy - Rudy Campbell in Loy's Department Store

2015-05-01 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of John Campbell. This is a photo of John Campbell's father very early in his career in retailing on the Square in Columbia, KY. You wonder if anyone else in Columbia history found their niche in life so early, and spent their entire active adult years working with the same people. But then, Columbia can only hope to ever have any couple so wonderful as Ruel & Runie Wooten where - or such a happy-to-be-here person as Rudy Campbell was. - CM. Clicking Read More

Elgin Clock - Rudy's Lad & Dad

2015-05-05 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo from John Campbell family photos. An Elgin Watch clock hung on the wall of Rudy's Lad & Dad in Downtown Columbia, when John Campbell's father, the late Rudy Campbell was manager there. There was no note with the submission as to whether Rudy's was a dealer for the watches or not. But it was in the day when "Department Store" meant a wide variety of sections for various merchandise - Lerman's in Columbia had ready to wear, shoes, men's & women's and children's ready to wear, and a sewing supply center, all under one roof - and Stewart's in Louisville did have a jewelry department, so maybe Rudy's or Loy's did, too. - CM
