Colin Glover was the guest speaker at Wednesday's Russell County Chamber of Commerce meeting. He represents the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Region 4, Kentucky. Glover told the audience at the Russell County Public Library that cyber threats are real and his agency is available to do a no-cost risk analysis on site. Larry Hopper, 68, Casey County, KY (1955-2024)

Larry Ray Hopper, of Dunnville, passed away Monday, April 15, 2024 in Jamestown. He was 68 years of age.

Larry was a retired employee of the Lake Cumberland State Park, where he worked for 28 years as an accountant. He enjoyed fishing, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with his grandchildren. His family lovingly describes him as a "Storyteller Extraordinaire."

Citizens Academy to be held by City of Columbia

The City of Columbia will hold its first Citizens Academy - a class led by representatives of the Columbia Police Department with assistance from other first response agencies.

The first class will be an initial four week session consisting of one day a week for a period of two hours.

The initial class will focus on the structure of the police department, emergency response, drug and alcohol training, possible tours of emergency organizations, and crime scene investigations. There will be a graduation ceremony at the end of the class.

Michael Foley, 70, Russell County, KY (1954-2024)

Michael Edward Foley, 70, of Russell Springs, Passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024 after a short illness.

He married Barbara Sue Anderson on January 1, 1989. Barbara preceded him in death December 13, 2023. Michael and Barbara shared many years of marriage, they loved to watch UK sports and live life together. Michael was a long time farmer and construction worker.

Ricky L. Coomer, 68, Adair Co., KY native (1955-2024)

Ricky Lane Coomer of Marrowbone passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at his residence, with his family by his side. He was 68 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Roger McKinney and Bro. Jerry Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, and will continue Saturday until time for the service at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral home.

Betty B. Stokley, 89, Clay City, KY (1934-2024)

Betty Bruce (Willoughby) Stokley of Clay City, Kentucky, formerly of Adair Co., and widow of James Ben Stokley of Lacoochee, Florida, passed away on April 6, 2024. She was 89 years old.

Betty was the matriarch of her family. A faithful Christian; a kind and gentle soul. She was a talented gardener, an amazing cook and devoted wife, mother, and Mamaw.

Layne Weston at SCY Championships

From March 8 through March 10, 2024, 9-year-old Layne Weston of Columbia competed in the 2024 12 & Under Kentucky SCY Championships in Louisville. Layne competed in 7 total events throughout the meet, finishing in 8th or better in every single one. He finished 8th (200 Free), 7th twice (200 IM, 100 IM), 6th (50 Free), 5th (100 Free), and 2nd twice (50 Breast, 100 Breast).

Layne is a member of the Southern Kentucky Swim Club, based in Bowling Green, at the Lindsey Wilson satellite location.

Tyler King, Co-Head Coach for the SKY swim team, says, "Layne is a very bright young man who has an amazing work ethic and an even better personality for someone of his age. His hard work in the pool is starting to pay off for him during competitions, and the short course championships showed why. His second place finishes in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke competitions were the events in which he shined the most during the meet."

Layne touched the wall at 36.59 in the 50 Breaststroke, and a blazing 1:19.85 in the 100 Breaststroke. Layne's 100 Breaststroke time has made him the 6th fastest 9-year-old swimmer in the country.

The Adair County Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6pmCT on Thursday, April 18, 2024 in the Adair County Board Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY.

In addition to regular business, items on the agenda include the Summer Feeding Program, the Time Clock Plus system, out of state travel for the ACMS BETA Club and for HOSA, and approvals for purchase of SAVVAS, Amplify, and the I-Ready Diagnostic Assessment Tool.

Saturday is last day of science play at RCPL

Science in play has been in focus since the beginning of the new year with seven unique play/create stations of STEM experiences on loan from the Kentucky Science Center in Louisville at the Russell County Public Library.

Shevawn Foley, play specialist for the Kentucky Science Center, says RCPL has enjoyed up to 30-40 kids at a time as most of the Russell and surrounding County elementary and pre schools have brought students to enjoy the STEM experiences.

Homeplace on Green River Spring Plow Day is Saturday

The historic Homeplace on Green River demonstration farm celebrates spring plowing again this year with its annual Spring Plow Day Craft and Music Festival from 8amCT to 8pmCT this Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 5807 New Columbia Rd., Campbellsville, KY.

Live music will be presented all day, along with country craft exhibits and sales, and demonstrations of such traditional farm skills as furniture making, tin smiting, lard making and log skidding.

"We're trying to capture the sight and feel of farming over the long history of agriculture in the southcentral Kentucky area," said Lyn Stanton, Homeplace on Green River Program Director.
