Governor's Thursday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As of 4 p.m. July 2, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 16,079 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 239 of which were newly reported Thursday.

"Our case numbers are staying relatively stable, but we can't become complacent," said Gov. Beshear. "Especially on a holiday weekend, where lots of families and friends may be getting together, we have to keep in mind the things that will protect us: washing hands, staying outside as much as possible, six feet away from people outside of your household, and wearing masks if you have to be inside or closer to each other."

Cameron Dukes named MSC Male Student-Athlete of the Year

By Chris Wells

Bowling Green, KY - Lindsey Wilson College's Cameron Dukes has been named the 2019-20 Mid-South Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year, conference officials announced on Thursday.

"Thank you to the selection committee for this prestigious honor," Dukes said. "Being named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the Mid-South Conference means more to me than people would ever understand because of how hard I work not only on the field but off of it. It's hard to put in words how grateful I am for all of my teammates, coaches, and teachers. Without them, I am not able to achieve such success."

"The biggest influences in my life are my parents and I can't thank them enough," Dukes added. "They show me the importance of work ethic and being passionate in everything that I do. They believe in me and support me with every decision I make. I'm committed to the mindset I developed at an early age to give my all in everything I do to realize the value of my time and the time that people invest in me. Again, thank you."

The annual award is presented to a graduating senior student-athlete and selected based on academic and athletic performances, leadership qualities, and their demonstration of the five core character values of the NAIA. The award is selected by the conference's eligibility committee and the administrative council. Community Trust Bank sponsors the Mid-South Conference Student-Athletes of the Year award.

Update on condition of Rep. John Bam Carney

Pastor John Chowning reminds us that prayers are still needed for Rep. John Bam Carney. Following is the Tuesday evening update on Bam from his brother Mark Carney.

“Bam was moved back to Kindred this past Thursday evening. The good part about being at Kindred is we get to go visit and while he can still only have one visitor a day they are allowing the designated visitor to stay up to 8 hours. This change just started yesterday and I know it is going to be helpful for Bam and many other patients and families as well.

COVID-19 questions and answers from LCDHD

A media Zoom meeting was held on July 1st, 2020 so Lake Cumberland District Health Department representatives could answers questions from the communities in Adair * Casey * Clinton * Cumberland * Green * McCreary * Pulaski * Russell * Taylor and * Wayne Counties.

Questions and answers follow, starting with Dr. Christine Weyman, Medical Director

If a person was exposed to COVID19 and are contacted (by a contact tracer) and can definitely remember that at the time they were wearing a mask, would they be required to self-isolate?
-Every case is different, it may depend on how long the exposure is, at what distance, in-doors or out etc-however a surgical/ cloth mask mostly protects the "other" person rather than the wearer. So yes we would quarantine a contact and require them to self monitor for symptoms.

2020 State Real Property Tax Rate unchanged at 12.2 cents

By Jill Midkiff

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) has set the 2020 State Real Property Tax Rate at 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. Kentucky Revised Statute 132.020 requires DOR to set the real property rate no later than July 1 of each year.

The state property tax rate is based on the revenue generated from the increase in taxable real property assessments from 2019 to 2020. If the increase in revenue is more than 4 percent after the exclusion of both new property added to the tax roll during 2019, and the property subject to Tax Increment Financing, then the prior year's rate must be reduced.

Because the assessment increase for 2020 is estimated at 3.12 percent, the state rate will remain the same as the 2019 rate; 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value.

All of the revenue generated from the state property tax rate is deposited into the state's General Fund.

Letter: No mask no service

Marie writes:
I agree with both. It's simple no mask no service. Walmart needs to make that a requirement. Every business in Columbia needs to make that a requirement. Look at the stats today Adair county is one of the highest for Covid cases.

Have you been into T.J. Samson Hospital here in Columbia and counted the beds? Or even Glasgow? It's not going to take much to overwhelm our health system here. It's broken enough. Our county officials and our businesses in Adair County need to make it a requirement in any county office or business you cannot enter without a mask! It's the best science we have next to a vaccine at this point it's so simple to apply.

You don't let people in without shirts or shoes because of sanitation it's no different with a mask. Probably more important at this point. --Marie

Alicia Kemnitz named Coaching for Significance award recipient

By Chris Wells

Bowling Green, KY - Lindsey Wilson College men and women's swimming coach Alicia Kemnitz has been named a 2019-20 Mid-South Conference Coaching for Significance award recipient, conference officials announced on Wednesday.

The honor is the first for Kemnitz and the first for a Lindsey Wilson coach since the inception of the award in 2015-16.

"It's an honor to be recognized by the conference for this award," Kemnitz said. "I, like most of my peers, have always viewed my calling to coach to be about much more than just my sport. As a coach of collegiate student-athletes, I have a unique opportunity to guide them in bridging the gap between childhood and adulthood. My goal then is to help build confident, responsible, and well-rounded adults when they leave LWC. To accomplish this, I strive to develop and maintain a character-first program, where my student-athletes are given opportunities to learn and grow in a safe, but challenging environment.

CU named enhanced affiliate of Kentucky Academy of Science

By Matthew Taylor

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University has been named an enhanced affiliate of the Kentucky Academy of Science (KAS). The new designation allows for all her students, staff and faculty to become members of KAS free of charge.

"Campbellsville University pays dues each year so that any faculty staff or student can become a member of the KAS at no cost to them," Amanda Fuller, executive director of KAS, said.

"This breaks down a barrier that many students faced," Dr. Richie Kessler, professor of biology and environmental studies, said. "Many of the biology and chemistry majors are members."

KAS is a membership-based scientific society with a goal to aid scientific discovery and understanding in Kentucky.

Kessler said the annual meetings are a great opportunity for students. "Attending the meetings allow students to present their research and look at research other scientists are studying," he said.

"We try to get our students to annual meetings with no cost to them," Kessler said.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 07/01/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

With Robertson County reporting its first case, we have now had positive COVID-19 cases in all 120 Kentucky Counties. Today we continue to see an increase in new cases in Lake Cumberland. The week of Memorial Day, Lake Cumberland had 11 active cases. Five weeks later, we stand at 76 active cases.

Today, most of our new cases were tied to restaurants and out-of-state travel. Our fear continues to be that the general public will not take the public health guidance seriously enough until it is so deeply embedded within our communities that we will be unable to slow the spread.

Our best chance for slowing the spread is for everyone to wear a mask when out in public, to avoid crowds, to social distance (stay 6-feet from others), to wash their hands with soap and water often and thoroughly, to stay home if they have a fever or are coughing, to increase sanitation, and to avoid touching their faces.

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 13 today: Adair: 6; Pulaski: 5; Russell: 1; and, Taylor: 1. The new cases include:
  • Adair: A 9-year-old male who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Adair: A 38-year-old female who is self-isolated, asymptomatic
  • Adair: A 15-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
