LWC Baseball Claims Victory in Series Opener against Taylor

By Brady Budke

Ten hits from the plate and ten strikeouts from the mound helped guide the Lindsey Wilson baseball team to a series opening victory over Taylor (IN).

The Blue Raider pitching duo of Chandler Harnage and Cade Duncan was all that was needed on a chilly afternoon at Egnew Park. Harnage earned the win getting things started off, going 6-1/3 innings pitched, striking out five, walking four, and recording two earned runs. Duncan came in to relieve Harnage on bump, where he went 2-2/3 innings, rolling home five strikeouts and two walks in the save.

Letter: Double wide on square

Shannon Sexton writes:
Would it not make sense to put up large "Truck Route" signs routing trucks onto the bypass instead of toward the square at critical points coming into town?

I'm sure the drivers would be glad to take the easier (safer) route if they only knew it was there. GPS often directs people to the quickest route instead of the one that makes the most sense. --Shannon

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - February 21, 2020

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Week seven marks the halfway point of the 2020 Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly. For the past couple of months, I, along with my colleagues in the Senate and House, have been working diligently to pass legislation on a wide variety of issues facing Kentuckians and our Commonwealth. With a little fewer than 30 days left in the session, we want to make sure that we are maximizing our time here in Frankfort.

The week also saw the passage of bills that touched on every aspect of Kentucky life, including a significant piece of legislation addressing how Kentucky builds and maintains roads, highways and bridges. The measure, known as Senate Bill 4, would change the way Kentucky hires its transportation secretary, a person entrusted with overseeing the state's 167,000 lane miles of roads. That's enough to wrap around the world almost seven times.

Beshear: More social workers needed to fight child abuse

Gov. Andy Beshear met with social work staff today to talk about the needs of state child welfare professionals. Adding 350 state child welfare social workers critical to fight against child abuse.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) Acting Secretary Eric Friedlander met with social work staff today to talk about the needs of state child welfare professionals and how Gov. Beshear's proposal to add 350 more staff can help better protect families and children.

Gov. Beshear and Secretary Friedlander visited the L and N Building in Louisville - which houses the state's largest social services office - to join Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) leadership and social workers to show support for them and discuss the challenges and rewards of child welfare work.

"Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving home," Gov. Beshear said. "When children are at risk, our social workers respond immediately with support to protect children, give them stability and ultimately try to preserve the family. We must make a serious investment to stop the rampant child abuse and neglect in our state. We must act now to hire more social workers, who can help us protect more children."

In his budget address last month, Gov. Beshear committed to increase DCBS funding to hire an additional 350 social workers and other support positions in the Child Protection Branch.

Medical marijuana bill advances in KY General Assembly

By Rebecca Hanchett, LRC

Frankfort, KY - For the first time in Kentucky history, a bill to legalize medical marijuana came to a vote on the floor of the Kentucky House. Apparently the first time was a charm.

Members of the House voted 65-30 to approve the legalization of medical marijuana under House Bill 136, along with eight floor amendments to the bill. The measure now goes to the Senate for its consideration.

"HB 136 when it is passed, which I hope that it is, will be the tightest medical marijuana bill in the country," said Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Louisville, who shares primary sponsorship of the measure with Rep. John Sims Jr., D-Flemingsburg.

Nemes said that he and Sims have spent years meeting with stakeholders to ensure that the legislation addresses their concerns.
