LWC Baseball Claims Victory in Series Opener against Taylor

By Brady Budke

Ten hits from the plate and ten strikeouts from the mound helped guide the Lindsey Wilson baseball team to a series opening victory over Taylor (IN).

The Blue Raider pitching duo of Chandler Harnage and Cade Duncan was all that was needed on a chilly afternoon at Egnew Park. Harnage earned the win getting things started off, going 6-1/3 innings pitched, striking out five, walking four, and recording two earned runs. Duncan came in to relieve Harnage on bump, where he went 2-2/3 innings, rolling home five strikeouts and two walks in the save.

Tyler Maskill and Derek Zavala each fired off three hits from the plate to lead the LWC offensive attack. Vincent Boils and Dillan Saunders each rattled off two RBI's on the afternoon, while Zavala, Austin Rayno, and Kelvin Llanos each had one RBI.

The first Lindsey Wilson run of the game came across in the second inning, when Saunders scored on a misplayed grounder by the Trojans, giving the home team the early 1-0 advantage.

The Blue Raiders crossed three more runs in the bottom half of the third, beginning with a Rayno RBI which pushed Maskill home on a fielder's choice. Saunders drilled a two-run RBI double (his eighth RBI of the season) to put LWC ahead 4-0.

Taylor joined the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on a Matt Dutkowski solo home run to center field. The Trojans added another run on a Jacob Morris RBI single, cutting into the deficit at hand and trailing just 4-2.

Zavala continued the explosive hitting effort for Lindsey Wilson in the seventh, tallying an RBI double to extend the Blue Raiders lead to 5-1.

A strong offensive eighth inning proved to seal the game in favor of LWC. Boils began the scoring with a two-run RBI single bringing home Rayno and Saunders. Llanos assisted Fernando Rosales across the plate on an RBI groundout which ultimately rolled over into the 8-2 victory.

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team is back in action tomorrow at Egnew Park beginning at noon CT with a doubleheader against Taylor.
