Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Following a long weekend honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Kentucky General Assembly returned ready to work on your behalf in Frankfort. The atmosphere in the Capitol was one of anticipation as hundreds of citizens rallied for causes in the Rotunda and met with their legislators to discuss issues facing the Commonwealth.

This week included Children's Advocacy Day at the Capitol, an event promoting children's safety, health, education, and economic well-being. I was honored to receive the "Champion for Children" award during the event highlighting our work with the School Safety and Resiliency Act from 2019.

Carol Perkins: Basketball dreams

Previous column: Why didn't you wake me?

By Carol Perkins

Thirty-five years. That is how long it was been since the Metcalfe Hornets played in the state basketball tourney at Rupp Arena. For larger schools in our regional, going to the state is "old hat" but for small schools with a population averaging around 450, it's a big deal. Last Saturday night, Coach Tim McMurtrey and the team of 1985 (with only one player who could not get home due to a snowstorm in the north) were recognized during a home game. The gym was packed! We all remember the events of that week with celebrations and pep rallies! Some of today's Hornet fans were only five or six years old, but they remember going with their parents to Rupp Arena as the Hornets won their first game against Louisville Eastern. That was another "big deal."

Our high school media team has developed a documentary video that consists of interviews with Coach Mc, a player or two, and fans. (You can watch this on youtube or at the end of this article). There were also clips of the final game of the region when the last shot led us to Rupp. Saturday night the team of 1985 lined up across the high school (that is foreign to them because they all played in the "old gym" at the first Metcalfe County High School). I don't know if they realize the impact that time in history had on our town.

The Hornets of 2020 are playing in the Class "A" tournament in Richmond, won the first game and will play the second Friday (after you read this, we'll know the results).

Nominations Open for 2020 Governor's Service Awards

By Julianne Hatton

Frankfort, KY - If you know an extraordinary Kentuckian or group who works diligently to improve the lives of others, now is the time to nominate them for one of the 2020 Governor's Service Awards.

To honor individuals and groups and highlight the impact of volunteerism and service, Serve Kentucky, an agency of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, is now accepting nominations for the awards.

"Kentucky continues to be blessed by individuals who serve their neighbors through faith-based organizations and as volunteers addressing a variety of unmet needs in our communities," Governor Andy Beshear said. "These awards are an excellent way to show our gratitude and appreciation for these individuals."

This is the 25th year for the annual service awards, which recognize the contributions of Kentuckians to their fellow citizens. Serve Kentucky hosts a special ceremony each year to publicly honor the winners and others who have given back to their communities through volunteering and service, without expectation of reward or commendation.

Huge 2nd half propels LWC Men's Basketball past Thomas More

School safety bill passes out of Senate panel

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - - On the second anniversary of the Marshall County High School shooting that catalyzed the 2019 School Safety and Resiliency Act, a Senate committee heard legislation to add to the measure.

"It's my pleasure to introduce Senate Bill 8 which many people are calling the School Safety and Resiliency Act II," Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, said while testifying before today's meeting of the Senate Education Committee. "I also want to thank all of those right now that are working across this commonwealth to help ensure safety within our public school walls."

He said SB 8 addresses changes sought by educators, safety officers and mental health experts. A discussion of those changes dominated the committee's meeting last week.

Wise, who sponsored SB 8 along with Sen. Tom Buford, R-Nicholasville, said the bill would clarify the definition of a school resource officer (SRO) to allow a school superintendent to specify any individual to serve as a district's school safety coordinator, clarify which school facilities are required to have SROs and to require that SROs be armed with a gun.

Bill raising age to buy tobacco passes Senate

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - The state Senate voted 28-10 today to raise the age to purchase tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, to 21 from 18.

The amended measure, known as Senate Bill 56, would bring Kentucky's statute in line with new federal law raising the age to 21.

The bill would remove status offenses for youth who purchase, use or possess tobacco products, often called PUP laws. SB 56 would still allow tobacco products to be confiscated but shift penalties to retailers who fail to follow the increased age restriction.
