New elk research launches this month

By Kevin Kelly
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Researchers will use a helicopter to locate and capture elk this month as part of a major research study on elk reproduction and population growth. The research will be conducted throughout Kentucky's elk zone and will launch this month.

"Netting by helicopter is the best way to live-capture elk for this important study on reproduction and survival," said Kyle Sams, acting deer and elk program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "After fitting the elk with transmitters, we will release them back into the wild near their point of capture so we can learn more about their behavior."

The effort marks the start of an ambitious three-year capture program to include hundreds of elk across eastern Kentucky. The study is a collaborative effort between Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and the University of Kentucky. The department will fund the effort and provide technical guidance while the university will analyze the data collected and report its findings.

Kentucky Artisan Center opens annual Reveal exhibit

The Kentucky Artisan Center announces the fifth "Reveal" exhibit, showcasing large format paintings by Bob Leo Jones, of Louisville. This exhibit will run Jan. 19 through April 30, 2020, in the Center's lobby.

The Kentucky Artisan Center is an agency in the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and is located at 200 Artisan Way, Berea, KY, just off Interstate 75 at Berea Exit 77. The center's exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily from 8amCT to 5pmCT, and the cafe is open from 8amCT to 3pmCT. Admission is free.

Jones is an abstract artist working in acrylics on large-scale canvas and Masonite. He started creating large-scale paintings in 2015, and his works are free flowing rather than linear. When working on canvas, Jones builds up layers of color with a palate knife. This method of layering allows for a longer drying time, which in turn allows the artist to think about how the painting is progressing.

Bear may need to guard the new oil well entrance

On the subject of the Pampered Angus Ranch Girls' excitement over the new Adair County oil well strike across the road, click here for background and to see the bear in Jimmy Woody's bottom that could guard the entrance to the oil field.

If the bear doesn't take care of unauthorized traffic, then ole Bud Mullins will have to be brought in. The late Gertrude Browning used to "scare the begeesus" out of her daughter Vicky when she was just a wee mischievous lass by telling her she might get tossed in the sinkhole with the ogre Bud Mullins, if her deportment did not improve.
