Property on Millerfield Road forfeited in plea agreement

From the Office of Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright

An Adair County couple has been sentenced for trafficking in marijuana, and property on Millerfield Road has been forfeited and ordered to be sold at public auction by the Master Commissioner, following drug trafficking convictions.

Pursuant to an Order of Forfeiture that was recently entered by the Adair Circuit Court in separate criminal drug trafficking cases, the Master Commissioner of the Adair Circuit Court will sell at public auction a house, garage, and approximately 2.014 acres of property located at 2343 Millerfield Road, Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky.

This real estate was forfeited to the Commonwealth of Kentucky as part of a plea agreement entered into by the owners, James Timothy Cook and Tammy Cook, after they were each convicted of multiple counts of trafficking in marijuana out of the residence. Investigations led by the Kentucky State Police Drug Enforcement Special Investigations (DESI), with the assistance of numerous other law enforcement agencies, revealed that undercover agents purchased a total of approximately eight (8) pounds of marijuana from the Cooks through at least seven (7) separate transactions in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Abbey of Gethsemani Registered Natural Area established

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet's Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves (KNP) has recognized the Abbey of Gethsemani's historic stewardship of more than 1,500 acres of field and forest in Nelson County by establishing the Abbey of Gethsemani Registered Natural Area.

The Natural Areas Registry is a voluntary, non-regulatory program designed to provide recognition for sound ecological stewardship and awareness of the ecological significance of a landowner's property. Under the terms of the registry agreement, the landowner does not relinquish any rights to the property and simply agrees to protect it to the best of their ability.

"The Abbey of Gethsemani welcomes the opportunity to become a registered natural area as a way of continuing and improving its stewardship of its land, much of which it has held for over 170 years," said Abbot Elias Dietz. "The most unspoiled parts of the property are grasslands and glades which will benefit from the expertise provided by the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves. We look forward to collaborating with the state of Kentucky in its efforts to preserve and enhance such natural areas."

To be eligible for registration, a property must contain habitat for plants or animals that are rare or have a declining population in Kentucky, or that contain an outstanding example of a Kentucky ecological community, such as an old growth forest, wetland, glade or prairie.

Carol Perkins: Santa Stories

Previous column: Going gray

By Carol Perkins

Santa stories are good ones. They are filled with magic and suspense just as a good mystery would be. Over the years, I heard some good ones and told a few. Those who didn't want their children to believe in this magical creature don't have our stories to tell. We'll share with them.

I had a hard time living in a house with no chimney. How in the world was Santa going to get my gifts in the house? Was he coming through the front door? That would be possible since we never locked them, but he wasn't supposed to come in like an average person. He was to fall down the chimney with a bag of gifts and then lay his finger "aside of his nose," and up the chimney he rose. Only there was no chimney. When my parents built our home, they left out one crucial essential. A fireplace!

They were very clever, however. Santa came through the stovepipe and out the woodstove. Yes, I fell for that one. After much thought about it and visualizing poor Santa coming through the soot and ashes, I was concluding that this was a Santa "tale" to throw me off, but then a miracle happened.

Russell Co. rebrands French Valley Business Park

Lake Cumberland Regional Industrial Complex is centerpiece of complex new marketing message.

What started as a process to rename the French Valley Business Park led the Russell County (Kentucky) Industrial Development Authority to think about site selection in an entirely new way.

"When we really thought about what investors are looking at when considering a location for their business or industry, it's clear that property is only a small part of the picture," said Bennie Garland, RCIDA Executive Director. "In truth, the advantages our area offers potential manufacturers go well beyond an ideal piece of land."

"The French Valley Business Park was originally named for the community in Russell Springs, but to a worldwide audience of site selectors, it doesn't convey context, location or meaning. Our idea was to rebrand the park with a name that incorporates 'Lake Cumberland' a major feature of our county and an internationally known vacation destination," said Garland. "After working with our marketing team over a number of months, the board selected the name Lake Cumberland Regional Industrial Complex."
