LWC Volleyball sweeps Madonna in pool play on Wednesday

Sioux City, IA - The No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team swept Madonna (MI) 3-0 in its second match of pool play at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center.

Lindsey Wilson (31-5) improves to 2-0 in Pool G while the Crusaders (25-14) fall to 0-2 in pool play. In the first pool play match of the day, the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon (31-3) also improved to 2-0 in pool play after defeating Reinhardt (GA) (33-4) in straight sets.



In the opening set, the Blue Raiders trailed 1-3 before going on a seven-point run which included two service aces by Abby Grubbs. Lindsey Wilson would maintain the lead the rest of the way, never allowing the Crusaders within more than five points. The Blue Raiders recorded 24 digs in the set, led by Elly Burke's seven. Kasia Niderla posted six kills while Mariana Pratali notched five of her own off of just eight swings.

The beginning of the second set saw a constant exchange of points, neither team garnering a lead larger than two. Lindsey Wilson went on a four-point run after a Niderla kill to make it 14-10 and never trailed Madonna again. The Crusaders would go on a 5-1 scoring run to make it 23-22 before the Blue Raiders would score the final two points of the set.

Lindsey Wilson's offense improved statistically in the set with a .333 hitting percentage. The defense played an important role, tallying 29 digs and three blocks in the frame.

The third set began similar to the second, neither team able to garner a substantial lead. There had been seven ties by the time the scoreboard read 12-12. Madonna went on a four-point service run to make it 16-13, before being silenced by an Alexis Smith kill. The Blue Raiders and Crusaders would exchange points until Lindsey Wilson went on another service run by Grubbs to take the lead at 23-22. LWC would have a match point at 24-23 before finally winning 26-24 on a Madonna setting error.

The Blue Raiders struggled offensively in the third set, marking 10 hitting errors and a hitting percentage of .122. Smith and Niderla each posted five kills in the final frame while Lauren Larzelere tallied seven digs.

Lindsey Wilson finished the match with a .235 hitting percentage compared to the Crusader's .206. LWC's defense produced 71 digs and 6.5 blocks compared to MU's 56 digs and four blocks.

Camryn Rich earned another double-double today with 40 assists and 10 digs. Burke (15) and Larzelere (22) also recorded double-digit digs. Niderla and Smith finished the match with double-digit kills garnering 18 and 11, respectively. Burke and Pratali each added four block assists to lead the Blue Raiders.
