ACPC Fall Festival a great success

By Laura Marcum

The ACPC Fall Festival was a great success! The evening began with the King and Queen/Prince and Princess crowning.

Our King is Jackson Corbin. The Queen is Kharli Stockton. The Prince and Princess Court included: Kindergarten-Jonas Partin and Faith Fudge, 1st Grade-Nash Collins and Maria Burton, and 2nd Grade-Hunter Ballou and Paisley Adams.

The fundraiser raised over $25,000, with the majority of the money going toward a school walking track, playground expansion, and classroom books.

Then families participated in an evening of games, face painting, barrel rides, and food. A big hit of the evening was the jail with Sheriff Josh Brockman manning the prisoners.

The Adair County Primary Center would like to say a huge THANK YOU to our students, parents, and community members who have supported us. We are blown away by your generosity and we hope you had fun as well. Special thanks to Lindsey Wilson College volunteers, the ACPC PTO, 313 Maple, our amazing staff, and loyal community volunteers.

WKU Research: Detrimental Effects of Light Pollution

By Tommy Newton

Bowling Green, KY - Most animal species utilize a biological clock to synchronize with the Earth's daily cycle of light and dark to govern activities important for reproduction, growth and sleep. However, with increased urbanization and industrialization across the globe, there is growing scientific evidence that artificial light at night can have harmful effects upon humans as well as wildlife. Such effects include weight gain and sleep disruption in humans, and reduced cognitive performance, sleep and survival in birds.

In a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, Dr. Noah Ashley, associate professor of Biology at Western Kentucky University, Dr. Ila Mishra of Case Western Reserve University and colleagues have identified another negative effect of light pollution -- disruption of the rhythms that regulate the immune system. They showed that exposure to 10 days of extremely dim light at night (similar to light produced from a single "night light") in captive zebra finches can significantly alter or abolish the daily rhythms of cytokines -- chemical mediators that regulate immunity as well as sleep, in many animals, including humans.
