Birds and sounds presented by Casey Extension Agent

Casey County Home Extension Agent, Debbie Shepherd, offered information about Backyard Birding in a workshop held October 21 at the Adair Extension Office.

She spoke of her mentor, her father, and said she wished she had listened more carefully as her dad led walks through the woods, listening to and identifying each bird by its sound.

She shared stories of her own love of, and feeding of, birds as she spoke of the most common backyard birds in this region of Kentucky.

Barbara Scott, 80, Green County, KY

Barbara Scott, age 80, of Greensburg, passed away Saturday at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital in Greensburg.

The funeral services for Barbara Scott will be conducted at 1pmCT Tuesday at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home in Greensburg with burial in the Fry Cemetery. Visitation is requested from 10amCT Tuesday until time of the service.

LWC Women's golf holds on to 4th at Roadrunner Invitational

Cohutta, GA - The Lindsey Wilson women's golf team held on to their position in fourth place at the Roadrunner Invitational following the second of three rounds at the Roadrunner Invitational. The Blue Raiders shot a 319 during the second round of play at Nob North Golf Course, a par-72, 5,851-yard design.

Lindsey Wilson was one stroke off their first-round mark of 318 during the middle round as they currently total 637 strokes for the tournament.

Revival Services at Glens Fork Church of the Nazarene

Thank you to those attending Gentle Chair Yoga

Gentle Yoga classes meet at 10amCT each Tuesday at the Lindsey Wilson College Wellness Center. Our group set out to have five sessions and we suddenly find ourselves completing 15 sessions. And we feel better after we breathe, stretch, and relax. Joints are proven to feel better with gentle movement and stretching.

Motion is lotion to joints so long as the motions are gentle. The policy of these health department training session is "no pain, no strain." If movement causes pain, the word is "stop" and don't force movement.

Donald Gene King, 80, Melbourne, FL (1939-2019)

He was a man of strong character, a great husband, a wonderful father, stepfather and Christian. He was known for his many jokes and stories, for his love for golf, sports and his family. He will be forever missed but never forgotten.

Donald Gene King passed away peacefully on July 12, 2019 after 17 horrible days in Steward Hospital, Rockledge, FL.

A Celebration of Gene's life (potluck) will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 11amCT to 3pmCT at Mt. Zion Church of God, 1640 Eastridge Cemetery Rd., Columbia, KY. Please bring your stories and a dish. Internment will follow in Eastridge Cemetery (the family cemetery) following the pot luck.

KY businessman, philanthropist Warren Rosenthal has died

Lexington businessman and philanthropist Warren Rosenthal, 96, who built the Long John Silver's and Jerry's restaurant brands, died Saturday. Rosenthal began his career in the restaurant business in 1948, selling hamburgers for a nickel at a Jerry's Restaurant in Lexington. He went on to become chief executive officer and president of Jerrico, leading the publicly-traded company as it developed a chain of more than 1,350 Long John Silver's seafood restaurants, as well as scores of Jerry's Restaurants and other eateries that came and went through the years.

Planegate: C-J compares Governors' flights

Gov. Matt Bevin's flights aboard state-owned aircraft in the first 45 months of his term had a total billed cost 80% larger than that of his predecessor, former Gov. Steve Beshear, through the same period of his first term.

The Courier Journal compared the two governors' use of state aircraft by examining Kentucky State Police flight records dating back to 2008, obtained through open records requests.

Salvation Army Angel Tree applications available til Nov 7

The Salvation Army Service Unit of Adair County is currently accepting applications for the Angel Tree Christmas assistance program. Applications are available at JOY Ministries, 411 Greensburg Street, Columbia, or at any school Family Resource Youth Services Center during regular school hours.

Janice Kay Phillips, 66, Liberty, KY (1953-2019)

Janice Kay Phillips of Liberty passed away on Monday, October 21, 2019, at her residence. She was 66 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 2pmET on Thursday, October 24, 2019, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville St, Liberty, KY, with Bro. Danny Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5pmET to 7pmET on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.

CPE: Data Center to inform higher education progress

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) announces the public launch of a comprehensive CPE Data Center to help inform higher education progress.

Located at cpe.ky.gov/data, the data center features 17 interactive tools that track campus and state progress on key metrics. Performance on the metrics will help guide policy decisions toward CPE's goal to have 60 percent of Kentuckians with a quality degree or credential by the year 2030.

"Connecting policymakers and our partners to these dashboards will drive strategic, data-driven decision-making to support efforts to improve enrollment, retention and graduation outcomes across all student demographics, resulting in a more highly skilled workforce for Kentucky," said CPE President Aaron Thompson.

KSP: National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia will be participating in the DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day to be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 10amCT to 2pmCT.

Our Collection point will be located a Kentucky State Police Post 15, located at 1118 Jamestown St., Columbia, KY.

All citizens that wish to participate may dispose of their current or outdated unwanted medication either in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box.

Here are a few "if" statements followed up with a question: If the Engine Brake/Jake Brake ordinance was passed, and If someone either pulled out in front of a truck or accidentally stepped out in front of a truck, and If in order to avoid/prevent an accident the engine/jake brake was needed in addition to the truck's wheel brakes... Should the truck driver disobey the law and use the engine/jake break or should the truck driver obey the law and run somebody over??? --Rickie

Adair Co. Grand Jury returns indictments Tue 15 Oct 2019

Indictments brought against 19 individuals from Columbia, New Haven, Russell Springs, Campbellsville, Hodgenville, and Somerset, KY, on charges including possession, trafficking, burglary, assault, nonsupport, abandonment, and wanton endangerment.

NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding.

The Adair County, KY Circuit Court grand jury, Columbia, KY, returned indictments against the following individuals on Tuesday, 15 October 2019:

Backyard birding workshop today, 21 October 2019

A Backyard Birding workshop will be held today at 12noon CT, October 21, 2019 at the Adair County Extension Office.

This is the homemaker club lesson for October and it is open to the public.

Learn to identify birds in your backyard. You will discover the calls and songs distinguishing between the wide varieties of our feathered friends.

Participants will also make and take a simple bird seed feeder. Please register your attendance in advance that calling 270-384-2317.

ACSO: Adair Co. man arrested for theft of ATV

On Tuesday, October 1, 2019, the Adair County Sheriff's Office was received information that a Honda 4-wheeler that had been stolen from the Chance community in Adair County.

On Thursday, October 3, 2019, Sheriff Josh Brockman located the ATV at a residence on Independence Ridge in the Breeding community. The ATV was seized by Sheriff Brockman and returned to its owners.

Chief Deputy Justin Cross was able to determine through investigation that Justin Bledsoe, 26, of Adair County was in possession of the ATV the previous day. A warrant was sworn out for the arrest of Bledsoe.

Donations needed for Hungry Kids Cafe

If you'd like to help Lois Cunningham keep the insurance paid so the Hungry Kids Cafe can continue, please bring donations this coming Saturday, October 26, 2019, the last day of the Farmers Market on the Square in Columbia this season.

The insurance due is approximately $260 and she would deeply appreciate help with it.

Lois counts feeding up to 85 hungry kids a week in the summer months and approximately 60 a week in the early and ending weeks of each season.

Cash donations will be so appreciated. She can also use the following supplies:

TCIS Cardinal Academy Students Visit Shaker Village

On Thursday, October 17, 2019 Taylor County Intermediate School Cardinal Academy visited Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.

While there, students toured the community, took part in Shaker music and dance, and tried their hand at broom making.

Shaker customs, architecture, and contributions to society were discussed, as well as their farm-to-table model of life.

Mrs. Mary Catherine Henderson Morrison of Greensburg, Kentucky passed away on Friday, October 18, 2019. She was 89 years old.

The funeral services for Mrs. Mary Catherine Henderson Morrison will be conducted at 1pmCT on Monday, October 21, 2019, at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S. Main St., Greensburg, KY, with burial to follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Bro. Brandon Cook will be officiating.

Windy, storms likely, high 77F

It's currently 58F at the Adair County Mesonet station. There's a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms today, with increasing clouds and a high near 77F.

A strong storm system will move into the Ohio Valley today, as a cold front pushes into the area. Ahead of this feature, gusty south winds are expected. Sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph are forecast throughout the day with gusts up to 35 mph at times. These wind gusts could make driving difficult for high profile vehicles. Additionally, loose outdoor objects could get blown around.

Storms will remain likely until about 3amCT, with an overnight low around 45F. South wind 7 to 13 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph.

Tuesday should be sunny but cooler, with a high near 64F. West wind 7 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Tuesday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 37F. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.
