No penalties as result of public school Sick Out investigation

By Mary Elizabeth Robertson

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary David Dickerson announced today that the Cabinet's Office of Inspector General has completed the investigation into whether Kentucky teachers engaged in an illegal work stoppage, also known as a "sick out," during the 2019 session of the General Assembly. The investigation found that 1,074 teachers did violate Kentucky law, which clearly prohibits work stoppages.

KRS 336.050(2) gives the Cabinet the discretion to prosecute and assess civil penalties of up to $1,000 per person, per day of work stoppage on any violation of a labor law in the state of Kentucky. Dickerson noted that while no penalties will be assessed for violations in this specific instance, this investigation was necessary to ensure that public schools remain open during the upcoming school year and that similar work stoppages do not occur in the future.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky farmers donated $613,246.37 to the Ag Tag Program in the 2019 fiscal year ended June 30, slightly more than the total for fiscal 2018 and the second-highest total in the history of the program, Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles announced.

The voluntary donations are divided equally among Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA). The KDA uses its share of the Ag Tag funds for various programs such as the Ag Athlete of the Year awards, the Kentucky Leopold Conservation Award, Kentucky Women in Agriculture, and the University of Kentucky Grain and Forage Center of Excellence.

Kentucky is number one - in the nation - in child abuse

By Linda Waggener

The saddest news I heard this week is that the state of Kentucky is the top in the nation in child abuse according to Courier Journal reporter Deborah Yetter who has researched statistics and written a five-part series on the subject.

I didn't trust a passing comment on television news, even educational television, so I dug a bit and there it was - Kentucky, the most violent state to children. Indiana right behind in second place. Here. In the Bible Belt.

This is one statistic that we can change. If you see something and feel called to say something, a Child Help number to confidentially report suspected child maltreatment in America is 1.800.422.4453. Or just call 911.
