Columbia, we have a problem - window panes falling from upper floor of historic building

2019-02-15 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The former Lerman's Department Store building on the Columbia public square has been empty for several years and, in the absence of responses, ownership has come into question. Window panes are falling out onto the sidewalk, creating a danger to the public. The City has been called to clear broken glass where window panes have crashed onto the sidewalk on the Jamestown Street side and onto Reed Street in the back. Radio station manager Larry Joe Smith has called on new Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots to start the process of condemnation. He said it worked for downtown Campbellsville where historic buildings once looked much like this one but are now being restored one after another. He said, "someone has to take the lead, I love my towns of Columbia and Campbellsville and I don't want to see this particular building left deteriorating, with birds flying in through the missing windows, for one more day without hope. I call on Mayor Hoots to get this historic landmark condemned so it can be saved." In a conversation with the Mayor this week, she said the process is under study now. In the pictures, the building is shown fronting on the square, and the inset shows Jamestown Street side where windows are missing.

Question: How do you open a jar with one hand?

By Linda Waggener

A wonderful right-handed family member has a broken right arm. It's so true that we don't know what we've got til it's challenged. Suddenly it's so clear why both arms and hands are needed - that second, dominant hand, not very usable for a few weeks, is so necessary from the largest to the smallest tasks.

A question for readers - is there a handy tool that allows a person to open a jar, bottle, etc with just one hand? Trying everything but so far not much success. There has to be something that works and we need to learn of it.

Confirmed case of measles in Barren River District

Unvaccinated child had travelled out of the country recently.

By Doug Hogan/Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY - A case of measles has been confirmed in a young child living in the region served by the Barren River District Health Department. The child, who is unvaccinated, recently traveled out of the country to an area where measles is endemic, the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) reports. The case is not linked to an ongoing measles outbreak in the state of Washington or other cases of measles in the U.S.

DPH, the Barren River District Health Department, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating in the investigation and have confirmed the child did not become infectious until returning to Kentucky. Public exposure is believed to be very limited and public health officials are in the process of notifying individuals who came into contact with the child during the infectious period.

"Measles is a highly contagious illness so it is extremely important that close contacts are notified," said DPH Commissioner Dr. Jeff Howard. "We are working diligently, along with our local health department and CDC colleagues, to make sure contacts are aware of this potential case, are getting any necessary medical care and aren't spreading the illness to others. We cannot stress enough the importance of vaccination. Measles, among many other vaccine-preventable diseases, is an extremely dangerous illness, especially for small children."

Letter: observed wreck on trip from Columbia to Sulphur Well

Robert Cumming writes:
That actually happened a little before 11amCT as I was heading over to the Lighthouse Restaurant in Sulphur Well and came upon it right after it happened. I was able to squeeze around the trailer blocking both westbound lanes.

It looked to me, from the muddy tracks in the median before the skid marks on the pavement, the semi driver lost it in the high cross winds running off the left lane into the soft median, then overcorrected back toward the guard rail jack-knifing his trailer. Luckily no one else was hit, injured or killed --Robert Cumming

Adair County Fiscal Court February Meeting Report

By Tiffany Kessler

Though the agenda was full for Tuesday night's regular Adair County Fiscal Court Meeting, one of the most surprising and pressing issues involved a dire need for law enforcement cruisers.

"I currently have four cars that are at or above 200,000 miles," Sheriff Josh Brockman explained to the court. "These cars are breaking down on the way to calls. We've had to have other agencies pick up calls because cars have quit. A couple of days ago we had a transmission quit and I'm currently driving my own truck for work."
