Third quarter propels Blue Raiders to win over Cumberland

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson women basketball team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 75-53 on Thursday evening after Reagan Turner scored a game-high 20 points. The Blue Raiders defense limited the Phoenix to only two double-digit scorers as Briana Vandlen tallied a team-high 12 points.

Two other Blue Raiders finished the game in double figures as J'Nayah Hall scored 18 points, adding five assists in the process. Heidi Huffman tallied 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Gerda Paulauskaite had a team-high eight rebounds as nine different Blue Raiders picked up steals.

The Blue Raiders next leave conference play and face Hiwassee (TN) on Saturday at 2pmCT at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.

Lindsey Wilson managed to take a 33-26 lead into halftime after shooting 35.1 percent from the floor and limiting the Phoenix to 34.7 shooting percentage.

A big Blue Raider run -- 14-to-3 - over the first five minutes of action would push their lead to 18 points to open the third frame. Lindsey Wilson started the quarter with four straight three-point field goals, two by Hall, one by Turner and Huffman as Turner added two made free-throws along the way.

LWC would trade baskets with the Phoenix over the remained of the quarter before two made free-throws by Hall pushed their lead to 19 points.

Lindsey Wilson would extend their lead to as many as 22 on a Huffman three-pointer with 4:42 left in regulation, a lead they would maintain until the final buzzer rang.

LWC finished the game shooting 39.1 percent from the floor, including an even 40 percent from deep. The Blue Raider defensive effort limited Cumberland to shooting just 34.5 percent from the floor. Lindsey Wilson controlled the glass, after outrebounding the Phoenix 45-36 for the game.
