Carol Perkins: In the 50s/60s, Halloween was dangerous time

Previously by Carol: Shopping with husbands

By Carol Perkins

"What are you going to be this year?" I asked my youngest grandson. He didn't know yet, but over the years, he has been a pirate, the karate kid, a ninja, and a ghost on Halloween. Costumes are no longer, in most cases, whatever can be pulled together at home and complemented with a rubber mask that was painful and dangerously difficult while wearing. Almost every year one of us in the family dressed as an old man or woman, a cowboy or girl with a half black mask, or a ghost.

Bevin requests USDA Emergency Disaster Declaration for farmers

Designation will provide low-interest loans to Kentucky farmers impacted by severe weather

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - - Gov. Matt Bevin today submitted an emergency disaster designation and declaration request in support of Kentucky's farmers to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

The request follows months of heavy rains and severe weather in the Commonwealth, resulting in flooding and wind damage in many Kentucky counties. These weather events adversely impacted the yield and quality of crops for farmers across the state and resulted in damage to buildings, fences, equipment and farming infrastructure. USDA Secretarial disaster designations must be requested by the governor or the governor's authorized representative. Once approved by the USDA, the designation will allow for the availability of low-interest loans to farmers in all primary and contiguous counties impacted by the disaster.

Eligible natural disasters include "damaging weather conditions or other adverse natural occurrence phenomena [that] have substantially affected farmers causing severe production losses."

The Paz-Holley Sunday open house brought back the smiles

By Mitzi Bault

This was an eye-opening day. In the past few weeks, I've had a few health problems. That, plus all the crazy hate in our country's news, and I have been feeling a little down.

Sunday afternoon I went with Linda Waggener to the Paz-Holley open house and saw so much love in the eyes of those ten little children - it was so heart warming; watching Jane Reed and Sarah Dean reading to them, coloring and working puzzles with them; to see Lisa Tucker helping two little girls washing their hands in their new sink; seeing Stacey Wilson helping the children discover their new swing set provided for the kids by Stacey and her Craig Bishop; and to see Rick Wilson and his family and Maggie Coleman and her family quietly helping people tour the house, guiding the very special event just as they had guided the fundraiser - all brought my smiles back.

Jane Lampton Clemens and her link to Adair County

Jane Lampton Clemens and her link to Adair County Sometimes we all need a little refresher on our local history, even those bits that everyone should know, but may have forgotten...

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

Some components of local history should be known to every citizen, but often this is not so. Many in this county know that Colonel William Casey was a founder of the first settlements in the area and that he is buried on his farm in the Casey-Johnston Cemetery. Some know that after his death several members of the family, including his widow, Jane Montgomery Casey, and his only son, Green Casey, migrated west and settled in Iowa. Mrs. Casey, along with others of the family, were interred at West Point, Iowa, where they lived out their lives.

On Saturday afternoon, Brandy Johnson, a waitress at Coe's Steak house in Russell Springs, clocked out for her break at her job. "She fixed her food, got a drink and then went out to a vehicle in the parking lot where she worked. She had probably planned to contact her sons who were at football games and see how they were, or maybe talk to her husband.

Whatever she planned to do was stopped in an instant however when a man walked up to her and shot her multiple times at point-blank range, " her boss Gerald Coe posted on a GoFundMe page. Johnson, 35, was shot about 2pmCT Saturday.
