LWC's Revanales' overtime goal pushes LWC past Life 3-2

By Christopher Coombs

Andrew Revanales scored with under two minutes remaining in the games second overtime period as the Blue Raiders defeat Life University (GA) by a final score of 3-2 in their regular season finale. Lindsey Wilson closes out their regular season slate with a 12-2-1 overall record including a 6-1-0 MSC record.

The Blue Raiders are back in action at the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Friday. After today's result, LWC will be the No. 2-seed at the conference tournament, facing off with the No. 7-seeded Pikeville (KY).

The Blue Raiders managed to record three shots in the overtime period while holding the Running Eagles (7-10-1, 3-4-0 MSC) to no attempts as Life was forced to play a man down for much of the second half. Jan Engels picked up his second assist of the match when he played a cross into the box that Revanales was able to head past Life's goalkeeper with just 1:29 left in the second overtime period, giving LWC the golden goal victory.

The Running Eagles managed a quick start to the match, striking just eight minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. Thierry Jules managed to create space from 18-yards out on a shot that beat LWC goalkeeper into the left corner.

The Blue Raiders would respond during the 12th minute when Engels challenged a defender down the end line. After overtaking the Life defender, Engels played a cross to the far post that found an open Renan Ramos who easily finished into the wide-open goal.

During the 16th minute Engels nearly converted on what could have been a costly error by Running Eagle goalkeeper Fabian Pekruhl. Pekruhl misplayed a ball, giving Engels an open shot from 35-yards out but his shot sailed wide of the goal.

The final 30 minutes of the half would feature an up-and-down the field battle that saw both teams produce scoring chances. Life would outshoot the Blue Raiders 9-7 in the half as both squads would manage three of their attempts on goal.

Life would create three corner kick opportunities in the half as LWC had two. The Blue Raiders also picked up two yellow cards during the action.

Lindsey Wilson would push the pace of play to open the second half registering two shots and one on goal over the first seven minutes. Neville Morgan would take a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box during the 52nd minute of play but a wall of defenders in front of him would just get a piece of the attempt, deflecting the ball away from their own goal.

During the 68th minute, Revanales was fouled by the Running Eagles goalkeeper inside the penalty box. The play resulted in a red card for Life's Pekruhl, forcing them to change keepers and caused them play with only ten men for the remainder of the match.

On the ensuing penalty kick, as a result of the card, Yuta Yamamoto would finish into the left side of the goal after Running Eagle goalkeeper Luka Zakarija dove in the wrong direction on his attempt to make the save.

Life would capitalize on a Lindsey Wilson turnover during the 72nd minute to level the score at 2-2. Jules would score his second goal of the contest off a cross from Wessley Soronellas, that gave Jules a 1-on-1 with LWC goalkeeper William Diaz.

Life would receive a free kick during the 87th minute as the attempt was taken by Martin Cortez from 25-yards out. The attempt rocketed towards the upper left corner of the goal but Diaz made a diving save to preserve the tie, forcing overtime.

At the end of regulation both squads had recorded six shots on goal as Life held a slight 14-13 advantage in shots.

In overtime, The Blue Raiders were again able to draw a penalty inside the 18-yard box, earning a penalty kick just three minute into the period. Yamamoto would again be called on to take the PK attempt but the shot sailed just high over the crossbar. Lindsey Wilson would control play inside their attacking third but couldn't manage to get one past the Running Eagles goalkeeper, forcing a second overtime period where the Blue Raiders Revanales would win it.
