Remembering Ed Waggener: Tribute to Ed

By Gerald Reliford

The community of Adair county has lost a loyal and dedicated member with the passing of Ed Waggener. He invested his life trying to help and improve the people and conditions here.

I met Ed forty years ago in February 1978. I and my family came home (being Adair natives) for a visit shortly after the big blizzard of 1978. It was to be a weekend visit, but 40 years later we are still here. A key player in that episode was Ed Waggener.

Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season Begins Monday

Seasonal restrictions on outdoor burning in effect

By John Mura/Lanny Brannock

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Division of Forestry is preparing for fall wildfire season. Wildfires in Kentucky threaten damage to homes, private property, trees and landscapes. More importantly, they place lives at risk, including those of firefighters. The vast majority of Kentucky's wildfires are preventable, the result of arson and careless open-burning (burning of trash, debris and brush).

Despite a wet beginning to fall, with more than nine inches of rain falling in Lexington in the month of September, and nearly seven inches falling in Jackson County in September, weather conditions can change quickly and become favorable to wildfire activity.

Remembering Ed Waggener: Counted him as a friend

Doug McCammish writes:
Ed Waggener cared. Ed cared about beautiful sunsets and sunrises and about anything to do with Adair County and Columbia. He cared about all the nooks and crannies of that place. He cared about businesses and farms and schools and about people. He cared about playing by the rules. He cared about his family and other families.

I may not have always agreed with his politics, but I will always honor and respect someone who cares like Ed did. I counted him a friend, and I hope he did too. --Doug

KY town's water reservoir runs dangerously low

By Will Wright
Lexington Herald-Leader
Original URL: kentucky.com/news/state/article218803370.html

A reservoir that supplies thousands of Eastern Kentuckians with drinking water has fallen to a critically low level over the past month, prompting officials to declare a state of emergency and raising fear among residents that their faucets will run dry.

The Martin County Water District has been in a state of nearly constant crisis since a massive water outage in January, when it shut off service to residents for days at a time, leaving many of its roughly 3,500 customers struggling to bathe or cook.

The district's most recent and pressing problem is the critically low water level at its reservoir.

Coyotes in Russell Springs, KY

By Melissa Gail Rexroat Me and my Husband recently last weekend went to visit my parents' gravesite in Russell Springs, out Damron Creek Rd. My husband is from Memphis, TN. He is not used to wild animals or things like that. We live in southern Indiana. You just don't see or hear coyotes in the area I live in.

As I got out of the vehicle with flowers for my parents' tombstone, I heard a comotion across the road in the woods, it sounded like a dozen dogs fighting. I stood still at the car and my husband said, "Oh my, is that coyotes?"

New KY licenses to have option for REAL ID compliance

New Travel ID licenses will finally be REAL ID compliant, a requirement for boarding commerical airplanes and entering federal buildings. New documentation will be required to apply for a Travel ID, while the process for an old-style license will remain largely unchanged.

By Naitore Djigbenou/Jordan Smith

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet unveiled the design of the 2019 driver's licenses, permits and personal IDs today and walked through the evolution of credentials at a press event at the Louisville International Airport. Kentucky's new issuance system and updated identity credentials offer increased counterfeit protection and showcase a new, modern look that gives a nod to the state's iconic images.

Through a phased rollout beginning in early 2019, Kentuckians renewing existing driver's licenses, permits or personal IDs, or those applying for the first time, may request their card in one of two versions: a new standard credential or a Voluntary Travel ID credential. All credentials will be produced at a single, secure location and offer the same security improvements.

Remembering Ed Waggener: Farewell To A Friend

By Robert Ellis

My regret is I only got to know Ed just these last few years. I think he and I had a somewhat kindred spirit, separated only by our varied ages. The last few phone calls I had with him, he would apologize for taking up so much time. Little did he know I was thoroughly enjoying our conversations; from photography, business growth for Columbia (he had a big heart for Columbia), to his early years in the newspaper business. We had planned, but could never firm up a date, of traveling around the countryside looking for photo opportunities. Now that will never be.

I have benefitted, not so much monetarily, but inspirationally, from Columbia Magazine's willing and readiness to publish my photos. Oftentimes I confided in Ed I felt like I was "flooding" his site with my pics, and he would always remind me my pics were always welcome and at whatever frequency I wanted to send them in would be fine. He (I think) was one of my biggest fans. I understand now by publishing other contributing photographers, as well as mine, Ed was inspiring others to get out and enjoy the world of photography...of which he had a passion for.

I will miss those phone calls, and trip we didn't take. My prayers are for Ed's Family during this time of sorrow.
