Coyotes in Russell Springs, KY

By Melissa Gail Rexroat Me and my Husband recently last weekend went to visit my parents' gravesite in Russell Springs, out Damron Creek Rd. My husband is from Memphis, TN. He is not used to wild animals or things like that. We live in southern Indiana. You just don't see or hear coyotes in the area I live in.

As I got out of the vehicle with flowers for my parents' tombstone, I heard a comotion across the road in the woods, it sounded like a dozen dogs fighting. I stood still at the car and my husband said, "Oh my, is that coyotes?"

There was a dog standing down the road on a hill and my husband said he thought the coyotes were after the dog. It was raining lightly and I am sure they came out due to the rain. I am terrified of coyotes. And I go every week or two to my parents' gravesite. We drive down to the picturesque town of Russell Springs and I put flowers on my beloved parents' gravesite. But everytime I step out of the car, I carry pepper spray because I am terrifed of coyotes.

We used to own a big house past the cemtery where my parents are buried and when I was about 25 years old, I was down on Damron Creek with my parents at the house and we had brought our sweet pomeranian/collie dog mix, a small little dog Raynor. And one night my mother and I were going to drive down to Russell Springs and go cruising around downtown after dark and by McDonalds. And my mother stepped out on the porch, it was a fairly large porch. My little dog ran out barking and my mom called for him to come back in. He came running. She said "honey," to me, "who has about a dozen little german shepherd dogs?" I said I do not think thats shepherds, it's coyotes. She said there were about 5-6 peeking around the porch.

And this past Saturday evening, after I got home, I thought about the coyotes down home and how scared I am of them. I just wanted to write about them. There is a dog near the cemetery. He is gray and looks like a coyote. We call him Toby. Every time we are down there, he runs out barking at our vehicle and we honk and call him Toby. Which I don't think is his real name. But that's my story.
