Remembering Ed Waggener: Tribute to Ed

By Gerald Reliford

The community of Adair county has lost a loyal and dedicated member with the passing of Ed Waggener. He invested his life trying to help and improve the people and conditions here.

I met Ed forty years ago in February 1978. I and my family came home (being Adair natives) for a visit shortly after the big blizzard of 1978. It was to be a weekend visit, but 40 years later we are still here. A key player in that episode was Ed Waggener.

As editor and publisher of the Daily Statesman he offered me a job as editor of The Patriot Statesman in Henry County. There was too much drama in the event to share here how it all happened. For the two and one half years I worked with him there was always a mutual respect between us. I left the newspaper when New Life Christian Fellowship became strong enough to support a full time pastor.

I have continued our association through all these years and will miss Ed now he is gone. God bless you, Linda. And you as well, Pen and Tom, the two little boys I remember from forty years ago at the news office. You are in our prayers. And many good memories. --Gerald
