Charles Marshburn: Whoops! Didn't read it all

About: - Charles Marshburn: Hypothesis on why "Phlox" is "Sweet William" in Sulphur Well

Charles Marshburn: writes: "Didn't read the part about the white flower. Had the same problem in school!," and apparently admitting he's stumped, adds, "I think you have discovered a new species!" Thanks: That will be a first in 78 years, Can't remember any invention of mine which had been conceived by someone else hours, weeks, years and sometimes centuries before. A new species would suffice as just reward for all that disappointment. - EW

Charles Marshburn: Hypothesis on why phlox is Sweet William

About: - Wildflowers of KY: A Master's Roadside Bouquet, wherein the captioneer refers to what the rest of the world calls "Wild Phlox" as "Sweet William"

Charles Marshburn writes:
"Sweet William" most likely originated in Sulphur Well and Center and spread from those locations to the rest of the planet. "Phlox" is undoubtedly a misnomer derived from the preponderance of errant seed in the wind. - Charles Marshburn>
Thanks, Charles Marshburn,. I buy it, totally. In more than one half a century, I had not figured that out. It's pure genius on your part. But there's still a mystery: What is the little ten-petal white flower in the photo? Hope someone can enlighten us half as much on that as you have on the Sweet William/Phlox issue. - EW

Time running out to apply for a Kentucky elk hunt

A landmark restoration effort re-established an elk herd in the state's scenic southeastern region and created one of the most sought-after hunting opportunities east of the Rocky Mountains. Kentucky's elk herd is the largest east of the Rocky Mountains and more than all the states east of the Mississippi River combined. The elk restoration zone in southeast Kentucky covers 16 counties and more than 4 million acres.
Hunters interested in entering this year's elk hunt drawing have until midnight (EST) April 30 to buy applications. Hunters can apply online at the department's website, fw.ky.gov.

Kentucky residents and non-residents are eligible to apply for four permit types but can only be drawn for one. Each application costs $10.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will issue 700 general quota hunt permits and 10 youth permits this year through a random computer drawing conducted in early May by the Kentucky Commonwealth Office of Technology. Results will be available to applicants on the department's website May 15.
