Derek Coomer: Short-eared owl or northern harrier hawk

Identifying trail cam photo from Metcalfe/Monroe County line area

Comments re photo 78049 Another Rare Owl Scott Hurt Wells trail cam captures blue owl images

Derek Coomer writes:
The bird in the first photo looks like it may be a northern harrier or a short-eared owl, which are winter visitors to Kentucky. The broad wings make it look more a like the short-eared owl, but it's hard to tell with the lighting. Both harriers and short-eared owls hunt the same prey (small mammals) in the same habitat (fields with tall, native grasses). The owls tend to hunt in the twilight hours, and harriers during the day. I've seen both in Adair County in fields along Bliss Road and Cabin Fork Creek Road. - Derek Coomer

Thanks, Derek - Couple of notes from Scott Wells; the photo was at daybreak. And the eyes in the first photo appear to be front facing. Also, I'm wondering if the blue coloration plays any role as a distinguishing factor. - EW
