Kids are talking more and adults are listening

At this meeting, in addition to the report on the needs assessment, a reminder was given of the Saturday, March 17, 2018 Farm Home and Garden Expo at Adair County Elementary School, 870 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Special activities of the day for young folks include 4-H cupcake wars, free meals, demonstrations and youth activities.

Tony Rose, Adair County Agent for Youth and 4-H, gave a followup report to the Adair County WATCH Coalition on the Youth Community Needs Assessment at the March meeting.

Challenges identified include needs for keeping kids drug free, stopping bullying, more mentoring, community centers and self-defense training.

He said he is 55 now and for 45 of those years our communities have been talking about fighting drugs -- the difference now, he said, is that the kids are doing more of the talking -- and they're coming up with new ideas.

Life with her added to the family is filled with joy as the smiles on her little face and on that of her grandmother Debbie Murray demonstrate. J.C. Lasley, 79, Adair Co., KY (1938-2018)

He was a member of Santa Fee Baptist Church and owner and operator of J.C. Lasley Dozer Service for many years. He earned a reputation for exceedingly fair business practices and as one of the most gifted dozer operators South Central Kentucky has ever produced. He was farmer and large landholder. He was the patriarch of an influential Adair County, KY, family. He was the son of the late James & Lizzie Jones Lasley. His wife, Bonita Todd Lasley, survives. He leaves 14 direct living descendants.

Lela Mae Murphy Land, 92, Casey County, KY (1925-2018)

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Separate Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Henry Land, who passed away March 16, 2002. She was born September 9, 1925 in Casey County, KY, a daughter of the late William Henry & Emma Wethington Murphy. She leaves 20 direct living descendants.

Check your tax withholding.

You may have noticed an increase in your take-home pay recently due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed by Congress in December, 2017.

Now, you need to determine how that will affect you when it comes time to file taxes next year. The IRS has released a new withholding calculator to help you determine whether to change your withholding status on your W-4 to reflect these changes to the tax law.

Arlene Grant, Glensfork, Adair Co., KY (1927-2018)

She was the matriarch of a prominent Adair County, KY family. She was the daughter of the late Bascum & Grace Bradshaw Grant. With her death, four siblings, of the 12 children born to Bascum & Grace Grant, survive. She leaves four direct living descendants. She was a cook and had worked at Lindsey Wilson College for 30 plus years.

Anita Rees: Cows on the Run may be in next county by now

As I drove up the cows were walking across the road then took off when I got closer. I snapped the pic thru my (dirty) car window and enlarged it. Never found their owner... however, I did find lots of people in this area who don't own them. I hope they're contained by now... if not they're probably in the next county. - Anita Rees

Alexandra Morgan: Felix found. A Farewell to Felix

Alexandra Morgan responded to a CM inquiry about her beautiful beagle mix puppy. It was, sadly, not the news everyone hoped to hear. "Sadly," she wrote, "a lady did find him but he had been hit. We lost our baby boy."

Betty D. Adams, Taylor Co., KY/Adair native (1939-2018)

She was a native of Knifley, Adair County, KY. She a member of a high respected family. She was the daughter of the late John R. Jones & Sarah Frances Stapleton Jones. Her final resting place will be in Knifley. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church. Over the years, Betty worked at McMahan's Shoe Store, Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville, and Collins Drug Store in Columbia, KY. "Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family effortlessly and unconditionally. Her generosity and love for them knew no bounds. She was a woman of faith and cherished all the simple things life offered. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, shell hunting at the beach, and spending time with loved ones. Family gatherings were always full of stories and plenty of laughter and love. She touched the lives of many with her generous spirit, compassion, and selflessness. Anyone who met her, loved her. She always had a way of making you feel loved and worthwhile. Stephen Sanders, 60, Knifley, Adair County, KY (1957-2018)

He was known and widely respected, particularly in Adair, Casey & Taylor Counties by many, having served the community well as a co-owner of Service Cleaners in Campbellsville, KY. When not working at the cleaners, he could often be found farming, an avocation he really enjoyed. He was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Clementsville, Casey County, KY, where he served in several roles including the Parish Council. He also served on the Revisit Knifley Committee. His final resting place will be in St. Bernard Cemetery, beside the church he loved.

Beef Expo sales over $1 million again for 32nd Winter Beef sale

Average Up Slightly in 32nd Run of Winter Beef Event. The sale topper was the grand champion bull in the Limousin sale, sold by Fawley Farms of Ohio for $8,750. The top Kentucky animal was a Simmental heifer consigned by Metzger Cattle Co. of Rockfield, which brought a high bid of $7,700. An Angus heifer consigned by Kalli Flanders of Buffalo, Kentucky, was gaveled at $7,500.
