Betty Knifley, Mary Ann Hixt, at Union Cemetery

2017-05-28 - Union Cemetery, 174 Milltown Church Road, Columbia, KY. - Photo by Ed Waggener, Columbiamagazine.com(c) .
When Betty Shirley Knifley, Bliss, KY; left, and her sisterMary Ann Shirley Hixt, Rockfield, Warren County, KY, agreed to oversee the affairs of Union Cemetery, it was out of love for the community, to carry on the work of their father, the late James Edwin Shirley (1922-2014), and of Bob Moss, of Gradyville, KY, out of love for their father and for the community. It wasn't so much because of family, they thought. Both James E Shirley and their mother, the late Jessie Caldwell Tupman Shirley (1929-2010), are buried at Haven Hill. But in their work mapping the cemetery the sisters are finding family ties, or at least suspected ones. The tall monument in the far background is to a Shirley, who may be an ancestor. As is often the case with work in cemetery care, never before known kinships are learned. The cemetery is a must see for anyone interested in Adair County History, and not just for the large number of final resting places for Gradyville Flood victims. There are also Revolutionary War soldiers' graves, the relocated Gilmer Cemetery, moved to make way for Columbia's Walmart Center, and family plots for many of the great families of Gradyville and Bliss. Mrs.Knifley and Mrs. Hixt will be releasing information about the work and the effort to put the cemetery on a sound financial footing will be publicized in local media soon. - EW

By Michael C. Watson

Decoration Day in the United States was born out of the devastation of the Civil War. During this 'darkest of times' our nation suffered in every possible way. Millions sacrificed in various ways, more than half a million men and some women made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives to the cause. Even before the war ended there were some communities across the nation that paid tribute to these fallen by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. By 1868 the new-born custom of visiting the graves of the fallen had become something of a ritual, and grew with each passing year.

Decoration Day now Memorial Day has become a general day of remembrance for all our dead. With the observance of the day more than a century ago, families began to decorate the graves of all their departed, whether veteran or not. Today we continue this observance. Southerners in particular make the pilgrimage to family cemeteries, often far from their current abode, to honor kinsmen with floral tributes and placement of flags for veterans. This day became a time of reunion for families and friends who, a century ago and since, may not have seen each other since the last observance.

God Bless those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in time of conflict. The long list that follows is of those men who died during the Civil War from disease or in action. They each had a strong connection to Adair County. In large part, these men either resided in Adair County or were born here. Many, many others served to return home. This is a small list from a greater work, The Veterans of Adair County, which is a massive work that will be published within the next year.

Memorial Day tribute to Staff Sergeant Edwin Morris Harmon (1920-1943

World War ll took the lives of many devoted American citizens, some of whom were young men who bravely fought for our country.

My uncle, Edwin Morris Harmon, was one of these young men. Although he died years before I was born, I recently got to know him.

I had always known that my mother's brother had died in the war after his plane was shot down somewhere over France. There was a picture of him hanging on the wall in our home.
