Sunset on top of the world, Green County, KY

2017-03-23 - Greensburg, Green County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
This peaceful farm scene was photographed at dusk, Wednesday, March 22, 2017, while following the sunset up Buckner Hill, that San Franciscoesque area a mile or so straight up toward the sky from downtown Greensburg. I should also humbly apologize to the folks in the big blue pickup truck who looked like they were anxious to get around the slow-moving photographer's car. I probably need a bumper sticker that says," I stop for deer and sunsets and flowers and old silver buildings and ..." -- LW

Rollin Knifley: Differs with writer on largest military installation

Rollin Knifley writes:
I think Mr. Halsey is mistaken about Ft Knox being the largest military installation in the United States. At 109,000 acres, it is the largest in KY. Ft Campbell has about 102,000 acres, but most of that is actually in Tennessee. White Sands Missile Range is the largest military installation in the US at just under 3200 square miles. KY Afield Outdoors: Spring wild turkey season preview

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Spring turkey hunting is slipping into position before daybreak and sitting still as the sun eases over the hills.

It is breaking the silence with a call and getting a response that sends a shock of excitement down your spine. It is coaxing a love-struck gobbler closer and keeping your wits as it struts into range.

"There's something about that drumming, spitting, gobbling turkey in front of you that makes the ground shake," said Jason Lupardus, Midwest Conservation Field Supervisor with the National Wild Turkey Federation who has regional biologist duties in Kentucky. "I live for those moments. Favorite time of year, by far. You can't beat it."

Media Relations, Adair County Schools

Music programs across the country are celebrating National Music in Our Schools Month this March and both Adair County Primary Center and Adair County Elementary School are getting in on the action with a wide array of special performances and activities. At ACPC, almost 30 students undertook an out-of-class, take-home project this week, with a goal of building homemade musical instruments.

"I love this activity because there is so much creativity involved," says ACPC music teacher Laura Marcum. "We find that different materials make different sounds as well as items of different sizes. It's also a great time to make a science connection and talk about vibrations and how sound travels."

Jon Halsey: Wonders how military bases skew numbers

Comments re article 89475 Wallethub Link Kentucky most Federally Dependent State in US

Jon Halsey writes:
I can''t help but wonder how Ft. Knox, the largest military installation in the United States along with Ft. Campbell home to the 101st Airborne and the large Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond factored into these findings. Unfortunately, the article the Methodology section is abysmally short on details. One is left to assume that the Federal dollars flowing into the State in whatever form as a direct result of these three entities has skewed the numbers sufficiently to preclude any practical application or decisions based on this data.

Reviewing the analysis, it appears to me that the main benefit of this report, like so many others, was to provide aid and sustenance to the 5 authors.

- Jon Halsey

Jon Halsey - Good points. But when I had read the story, I assumed that might be possible - realizing that often times, Kentucky's Congressional Delegation may have been able send defense dollars our way, just as Sen. McConnell facilitated so many funds for this area over the years. I found it valuable. - EW
