Billy Joe Fudge: Bigger culvert, new bridge may be necessary To solve problem of more frequent flooding on Jamestown Street Comments re photo 70244 Culvert fails in Town Creek flash flooding more often now Click on headline for complete commentary By Billy Joe Fudge Recent news in higher elevations of Columbia provides conclusively strong evidence pointing to the "why" of the increased rate of flooding on Town Creek. - A. - Healthy forests are the most efficient and effective environmental ecosystems at rain water absorption and slow-release retention. Many raindrops are broken up into smaller droplets by leaves, twigs, limbs, stems and woody ground cover beneath the canopy before they even reach the forest floor. After they reach the forest floor they are absorbed by the inches of organic matter on the forest floor before reaching the forest soils beneath. Forest soils are healthy, heavily organic ecosystems in and of themselves and a square foot of the top few of inches of soil has dozens of creepy crawlers that are processing the rotting organic material and creating a fluffy, healthy sponge-like soil in the process. In addition a tablespoon of this same forest soil has billions of good microorganisms which are preparing the minerals and nutrients for quick absorption by the tree and other plant roots.
